BIGGS/TRANSIENT ORCAS - Sat, Apr 30 - Strait of Georgia - T23, T23Ds, T34s, T37, T37Bs, T49As, T65Bs, T75Bs, T87, T100Bs, T101s, T124C, T137s. On the sun kissed evening of April 30, a ginormous number of Bigg’s orcas went south in Georgia Strait. From the shore of Galiano Island. They were so close to shore! 40+ orcas confirmed by Brendon Bissonnette. -Karoline Cullen.

It rarely happens that we get questions about orcas answered, but yesterday was a little different. Upon leaving the dock, a group of eight who had been traveling south flipped all of a sudden. They were flying away from us on porpoise! Why?!! They were just socializing. They were just socializing when we got there. Then they started porpoising north again! Hey!! Come back here!!! In the distance we could see another 20 + exhales. Ooohhhhh! Sure enough the biggest T Party I’ve ever seen or heard of. Maybe 50 individuals who were making plans for the evening. I believe T137A was pretty interested in T075B. Wait til he finds out T087 is in the house. -April Ryan, Maya’s Legacy
*
Late Saturday afternoon, approximately 40 Bigg's (formerly referred to as transient) killer whales assembled in the Strait of Georgia near Galiano Island. This was one of the largest *single* groups of Bigg's killer whales ever encountered in the Salish Sea. Thanks to the ID efforts of April Ryan, Sara Hysong-Shimazu, and Daven Hafey from Maya's Legacy Whale Watching, Brendon Bissonnette of Prince of Whales Whale Watching, and Rachelle Hayden of Salish Sea Orca Squad, it was concluded that the group included: T023 "Janice" and the T023D's, the T034's, T036 "Flapjack" and the T036B's, T037 "Rocky" and the T037B's, the T049A's (minus T049A2 "Jude") and T049A1 "Noah", the T065B's, the T075B's, T087 "Harbeson", the T100B's, the T101's, T124C "Cooper", and the T137's. -Pacific Whale Watch Assoc.

MINKE WHALE & BIGG’S/TRANSIENT ORCAS - 4/30/2022 This morning's trip on MV Saratoga was breathtaking! We began our search by heading out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca where we saw a Minke Whale! They were hunting a California Sea Lion when we arrived and displayed some awesome percussive behaviors. 18:30 - Good afternoon! Attached are the photos of the Humpback that I took yesterday [April 29] when I was out at Dune Peninsula. I got there around 6:30, and I left when it was getting dark, around 8:20pm. When I left he was still hanging around, in between Dune Peninsula and Browns Point, he looked closer to the Browns Point side, about where the lighthouse is. It was a beautiful evening to witness, I saw his flukes several times, and when I first arrived he was very close to Dune Peninsula, but he kept moving in all different directions, all around Commencement Bay, and over by Browns Point, and a little north, he was all over the place. Most of the time he would just barely surface and only show his back and dorsal fin and just kind of float there for a second, and sometimes he would dive but not show his flukes, but sometimes when he dove he did show the backside of his flukes, and it was magnificent! He had very long down times, and was only blowing bubbles at the surface, and slowly/gently rising out of the water, I never saw any large blows from him. -Sally Milligan-Smith

Today was our first half day tour of the season on MV Saratoga! We started off strong with an awesome double-header! We first encountered the T123 pod of Transient Killer Whales and watched as they travelled from Mukilteo to Sandy Point on Whidbey Island. After that, it didn't take us long to find Gray Whales near Gedney/Hat Island. We saw a personal record breaking 8 Gray Whales!! We got nice close looks at CRC356, CRC2356, CRC22 "Earhart", CRC531, and CRC383 and the other 3 were a bit further out from our main stars but still visible. When we got back to Edmonds, we were pleased to see this year's Canada Goose goslings out of the nest and swimming around the harbor with mom and dad. -Justine Buckmaster

SOUTHERN RESIDENT ORCAS - Thu, Apr 28 - Oregon Coast (K pod) - Possible new calf in K Pod - The Center for Whale Research (CWR) is aware of a video posted by the YouTube channel, The Guide’s Forecast, taken off Pacific City OR on April 28, of members of K pod, including what appears to be a very young calf associating with K20. This calf would be the first viable baby born into K pod since K44 in 2011. CWR plans to document the calf during our photographic surveys so that we can assess its health, confirm the identity of its mother, and assign it an alphanumeric designation. The mortality rate for young calves is very high, but we are pulling for this little whale and hope to see it soon.

16:38 - [T123s] Just passed the Fox Island fishing pier headed north towards the Narrows...More adventures with the T123 clan taken from Fox Island. I was late to getting to the pier, yet they were still surprisingly there. They spent about ten minutes with me, shared a meal, and then were off. The T123 family has an awesome story. About a decade ago Stanley (Big Male) and his mom Sidney accidentally stranded themselves on the beach while hunting for seals. The likelihood of them surviving was slim, considering that the weight of gravity can crush an orca's organs while beached...on top of dehydration etc.... Sidney was pregnant at the time and the fact that her fetus survived was astonishing. That fetus was born, named Lucky and is now 10 years old. She now also has a four year old baby sister named Darcy. Every time I have seen this family they have been traveling close together and it's obvious that their bond is very strong. -Jami Cantrell

Sun, Apr 24 - Admiralty Inlet - Hello. First off I’d like to report a grey whale sighting. It occurred on April 24th around 11am. The location was just SE or MatsMats bay at the “X” location below {47.945853, -122.673926]. The whale surfaced about 30-40 yards in front of our boat and we saw the classic grey curve come out of the water for about 3-4 seconds before it went back under. This past Sunday afternoon we visited Langley Whale Center and confirmed with the folks there that what we saw was most probably a grey whale. Of all the pictures of the Greys the one most closely resembling what we saw was this one [image of CRC396 was shared just for reference] -Bill Hasan

GRAY WHALES - Mon, Apr 19 - Northern Saratoga Passage - ~17:00 - A gray went zooming by southbound just before 5pm, close to the beach but not feeding. This one popped up literally 3x further down the beach than I was expecting, several times – lol. Anyway, it came to screeching halt at the Happy Meal Mudflats just south of Mariners’ Cove and hung out in one spot feeding for a couple of minutes before moving on toward Polnell. -Marianne Parry

11:36-12:00 - Up island trip: Oh surprise, I see them again. They turned, changing direction south of my location, reportedly near False Bay. This time I counted 7 but it was hard to count accurately. They were 3/4 - 1 mile out and swinging away from the shore to N/NW. They were moving fast and were porpoising as they surfaced. The wind picked up the wave that was pushed ahead in a dramatic parade of beautiful beings. I mile south of Landbank.

HUMPBACK WHALES - Fri, Apr 15 - Central Puget Sound - 18:38 - Humpback whale is north of Rolling Bay about a mile out heading south, steady pace. Doesn’t look to be too big of one. I have seen many of both kinds out on the water and it looked definitely like a humpback. And it had a dorsal fin, black. -Torrey Hall Volk

This one looks different from any gray I can recall seeing – it has a huge extra bump right behind the blowholes, and if you zoom in, it really looks strange and almost disturbing. I hope it’s not from injury or something. Very distinctive though. -Marianne Parry

HUMPBACK WHALES - Wed, Apr 12 - Strait of Georgia - Yesterday was a nail-biter in the Salish Sea! 5-year-old humpback BCX1773 “Valiant” was seen in the middle of a large group of Bigg’s killer whales (T34’s, T37’s, and T65B’s). According to PWWA naturalists on scene, Valiant was rolling around and trumpeting with each surfacing, a behavior associated with aggression in humpback whales.
This was not Valiant’s first run-in with orcas. In 2019, Valiant, at the young age of 2, was seen following closely behind a pair of orcas in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Last year, Valiant was harassed by a group of orcas but “aggressively chased them away”. The extreme scarring on Valiant’s tail indicates that this whale survived a brutal orca attack at just a few months old. Did that initial encounter shape the way Valiant interacts with orcas today? The message is pretty clear… don’t mess with Valiant!
follow-up: …pretty much directly in the Tsawwassen ferry lane. Our operators contacted BC Ferries on the radio and they were great about slowing down and changing course to avoid both the orcas and the humpback whale! -Erin Johns Gless, Executive Director, Pacific Whale Watch Association

SOUTHERN RESIDENT ORCAS - Sun, Apr 10 - Haro Strait (J pod) - Center for Whale Research Encounter #16: “ As “Orcinus” turned to face the freighter’s wake, a dorsal fin tip or two could be seen zipping along the surface in mid-Haro Strait near Kelp Reef as several of the whales surfed back south in the ship’s wake. When the whales regrouped after their surfing safari, J37 and J59 had showed up again with J40 close beside them. J46 and J49 joined the threesome while J42 and J53 wandered off although J42 soon came back and joined the group again. ” [See CWR Encounter #16 for full Encounter Summary and more photos] https://www.whaleresearch.com/2022-16

Sun, Apr 10 - Central Puget Sound - ~16:00 - I was out kayaking on Sunday afternoon about 4pm in Liberty Bay. And there was a gray whale surfacing every 5-10 minutes. We watched it surface by the marina first, and then it moved its way to the end of the bay. We were surprised how close to the dock it surfaced. Probably 50 feet from the dock. It then moved its way back to out of the bay and toward the inlet north of Lemolo. It surfaced 3-4 times in the same spot VERY close to shore. But it was far away from us, so I can’t say how far in feet. It then moved out and surfaced probably 20 feet from the naval ship stationed at Keyport. It was surprising to see how close it surfaced from the ship. -Christopher Blesie

The surface was choppy and I only caught glimpses of partial saddle patches including J39 Mako (ID Monika Wieland Shields) and wonderful to see J37 Hy'Shqa with 6-7 week old J59. The first group 5-6 members in a loose formation 1/2 mile out. The second group closer in with 2 (3?) calves including J59 with Mom J37 Hy'Shqa. For 10 minutes at 13:45 the tight group formed a resting line. J59 was very bouncy changing sides while swimming with J37, back and forth. We made our way north from there and found CRC531 fluking around near Tulalip. Last but certainly not least, southbound off the NE side of Hat Island was a cuddle puddle of 4 gray whales! This social group was made up of CRC21 "Shackleton", CRC22 "Earhart", CRC383, and CRC2362! COASTAL ORCAS - Sun, Apr 3 - N CA Coast - At 1630, from shore at Patrick's Point. [N of Trinidad, CA]
In Sue-meg State Park (41.3198 -124.1620), we watched through binoculars three Oo [Orcinus orca] swimming north about 0.5 nmi from shore. There was a tall but not fully adult male, a medium falcate likely female and a smaller one, stocky with a squat angular dorsal fin shorter than seemed right for body length. They were dispersed, paused to mill off the reefs, along surface slicks, then increased speed once past Patrick's Point. I kept scanning offshore for other subgroups, didn't see any, in part due to light haze. By around 1715 we lost sight of the trio.
At 1813 I got a text from commercial fisherman Marc Schmidt (an avid wildlife biologist who instantly notifies me of Oo et al.) who was passing Big Lagoon (at 41.1981 -124.2119, 200' depth), about 4 nmi NW of our shore observation reporting 8-10 Oo including one big male "near some good salmon sign and I saw a couple salmon... heading north but then milling around that bait spot", "...some of them looked nearly a mile apart". He got distant cell phone photos of two. -Jeff K. Jacobsen
