BIGG'S TRANSIENT ORCAS - Sat, July 31 - B.C. Gulf Islands (T49A2, T77C & T77D) - 14:15 & 19:30 - We had double sightings today, right by the shore off Mayne Island on the Strait of Georgia. First, 3 orcas came by at 2:15pm and headed toward Saturna. Then 3 orcas came at 7:30pm in the opposite direction, also close to shore. They did not bother the seals in either case and seals remained peaceful on the rocks. Seals always seem to know if there is danger or not. Could they be the same group? The final photos are the second group a few minutes later off the Mayne Island Lighthouse in the sunset light. -Yves Tiberghien, Mayne Island

July 28
SOUTHERN RESIDENT ORCAS - Wed, July 28 - Strait of Juan de Fuca - ~17:00-~18:30 - I live on the beach just east of Otter Point, and I saw many orca on July 28, 2021, at approximately 5 pm, to approximately 6:30 pm. They must have been feeding, as they don't usually stay in this area too long, and usually run by this area quite fast, but not this time. At first, I thought, maybe 20 orca, which is a really large number (for here), but, now, I think there were many more, due to the length of time that they continued to pass by me. Every time, I thought it was over, then more came. This was the first time I've seen them this year. It was a spectacular show. They were all over the place. Some close to shore, maybe 200 feet off my beach. These ones, were mostly in pairs and threes, and heading west, and running fast to Otter Point. Some were maybe a mile off shore, and some far offshore (4-5 miles?). They were heading west. There was lots of breeching (mostly the ones way offshore), but I did see one breech maybe 1/2 mile offshore. I was so happy and excited to see them, I phoned 2 of my neighbours so they could see them too! Really glad I got to see it, and thankfully, they came back again. I have no photos to confirm this, as I found out a long time ago, that the whales usually go by too fast, and it is better to just enjoy and watch. -Lynda J

11:30 - Grouped up, now past point Robinson, playful, closer to Vashon shores but moving to mid-channel, long dives, steady southbound. ---- We watched from the early morning as they passed the north end of the Island. They were mostly out of camera range, but was able to snag a far away picture of a hunt in progress as they took down a harbor porpoise for breakfast. Switching quickly to binocs, we watched as they formed a big loose circle around Callisto/T65A6 and let her work at finishing the kill. It took her awhile as she valiantly chased and gave wild tail slaps as her family looked on then finally joined to share the meal and moved southbound after a bit. So cool to witness that teaching moment! Once they hit Point Robinson they were grouped up and was more playful than usual after having just feasted and were throwing flukes, rubbing and tousling as they surfaced and passed. Mama was right in the middle loving on her babies, it was very sweet. It was quite boat heavy at the Point, and they had to navigate through a maze of motors and took to long dives as they moved southbound. Love that family so much, it was a great day! -Marla Smith

I had an epic visit from my favorite Bigg's family, the T65A's. They hunted extremely far away from the beach, but I was able to witness the incredible power these orcas display while hunting. SOUTHERN RESIDENT ORCAS - Tue, July 27 - Haro Strait from Strait of Juan de Fuca - You can't have too many baby pictures, right? Look who many of us got to meet tonight, L125, the newest member of the Southern Resident Killer Whales! It was an amazing evening on the westside. So lovely to see all of those beautiful open saddle patches. We watched members of K & L pods foraging for Salmon for a few hours. ----After 108 days without J-Pod and more than three weeks with no Southern Residents in the Salish Sea, members of all three pods returned to inland waters today and reached the west side of San Juan Island this evening. It was an incredible moment when shortly after we started hearing calls on the Lime Kiln hydrophone, the dense fog suddenly parted to reveal the whales approaching across Haro Strait. We did not get a full assessment of who all was present, though it was easily 40+ whales and we did confirm Js, Ks, and Ls. They headed south this evening towards Eagle Point at dusk. Quickly traveling with 3 females and a large male, L125 was bounding out of the water, arching her strong body up over and over as she passed by me with L109 Takoda and L55 Nugget, members of the L4 matriline.
20:10-20:25 - 12-14 Southern Residents, maybe more, southbound. a tight group of 4 closer in, porpoising over and over at high speed, lunging high out of the water.
20:00 - 4 orcas far out, southbound at Edwards Point. Lots of splashing.
19:55-20:05 - Northbound, approaching Edwards Point, 4-5 orcas spread out, one taking a break to lie on its side, dorsal up. Much splashing in the western sunlight. Turning south again at 20:00.
19:23-19:35 - 12-14 Southern Resident orcas southbound at Edwards Point. Traveling quickly in small groups spread out. One taking time to cartwheel next to its companion on its back, belly up. This group included a youngster, 3-4 large males. Some milling for a few minutes, a half-breach, but generally quickly southbound. In the glancing sun, every blow illuminated with the fog bank in the distance. Very beautiful. K20 Spock and K 28 Comet seen but with choppy waves and distance, IDs didn't come easy.
18:50-19:05 - One orca, a large male, northbound followed by 4 others including a second large male approaching Edwards Point (just south of Landbank). Milling for a few minutes with a tail lob. I think these are transients but are too far away to get a good look. Fins seem like transient fins.

~16:50-18:30 - Around 4:50pm from Dune Peninsula in Tacoma. The orcas seemed to be split into two pods and with what seemed like possibly 2 males and then another pod of 3 females/juveniles? I first spotted a male in front of the red container ship, with my binoculars. Then I saw the pod of 3, and they were more towards mid channel, both pods seem to be moving towards point defiance. I kept losing them now and then, maybe they were doing deep dives? I watched them move past the Tahlequah ferry line, and continue to the tip of point defiance, where they milled about in between point defiance and the southern tip of Vashon. I stayed there watching until about 5:30pm. Then I went down to Titlow Park and saw two orcas around 6:00pm right across the way on the Gig Harbor side of the Narrows. They started going north again for a little while but then turned around and continued south slowly and there was some splashing about. I left Titlow around 6:30pm and they were continuing past Point Fosdick looking like they might go into Hale Passage. -Sally Milligan-Smith

BIGG'S/TRANSIENT ORCAS - Fri, July 23 - NW Strait of Georgia (T2Cs, T90s) - Encounter with the T090s and T002Cs, the Discovery Islands Resident Transients. They spent the day doing what I believe is a big sweep searching for dolphins. 5-7 knots just cruising past all the seal haulouts and working their way through all of Bold Point, Village Bay, Open Bay, Heriot Bay, right through busy Drew Harbour anchorage and finally back up the way they came finally falling asleep at around 4pm. -Nick Templeman, Campbell River Whale & Bear Excursions

Fri, July 23 - San Juan Islands (T36A2 & T36A3, T137s) - 16:30 - Small group of orcas spotted just outside Deepwater Bay, Cypress [Island]. Heading south. -NW Sailing Adventures, LLC

Quickly found the T137s by Lummi Island....we were first on scene! Lovely close passes (all photos with 300 zoom and cropped), especially with Jack, T137[A] (born 2002). They cruised in a large circle, then were joined by 2 or 3 others (T36A2 & A3?), and after some logging, went on a hunt! We didn't need to travel far - just to the SW end of Lummi Island. They were spread out, but came together at mealtime. We were treated to breaches, tail slaps, a spyhop, and several of them porpoising around their ultimate lunch, a harbor seal. Such a beautiful day, too many photos, but such a wonderful treat. 11:00-13:00 - Six whales, including at least one large bull, on the edge of Rosario Strait and Bellingham Bay. They hung around two hours from 11-1, then slowly swam toward Eliza, then Vendovi, around Jack Island, then along the northeast coat of Guemes back toward Rosario. We watched them from a distance and only grabbed these videos when they finally got on the move and chose to come straight at us. At the time of the video [pixelated] the bull was over by Eliza Island on his own and these animals were swimming in his direction. -Cory Marshall

GRAY WHALES - Wed, July 18 - Hood Canal - ~12:45 - I spotted this whale from land around 12:45 from Port Hadlock. From the fluke and dorsal ridge, I thought it was grey, but it was a bit small... It spent a lot of time in the same area, skimming the surface and doing short dives. Follow-up: We were on the shore of Oak Bay in Port Hadlock facing SE. It was headed East-SE but I don't know if it then headed into the Sound or toward Hood Canal. No photos, it was pretty far away. I only could see the spout without binoculars. -Jessica Rose

06:10-06:35 - Watched a lone Gray Whale travel into Port Susan Saturday, July 17th, from about 6:10 - 6:35 AM from the Camano side. The whale was observed from a high bluff on the east side of Camano Island travelling from south to north about 1000 yards offshore about a half mile south of Tyee Beach. Observed the whale progressively travelling over several sequences of 2-4 routine blows followed by deeper dives with at least partial fluke exposures. This whale appeared fairly dark above compared to the typical "Sounders" that we've observed over the past several years here, and with a relatively light, non-distinctive accumulation of barnacles and lice on the visible left side. The size seemed to be about typical for the Grays we've seen from here. -Don Rosie, Camano Island

HUMPBACK WHALES - Thu, July 15 - Elliott Bay - 20:11 - Just spotted them surface off Alki Beach from kayak. There's two animals... not sure what the other one is... FYI think it was a humpback and her calf, definitely saw the distinct dorsal fin! I was probably about half a mile out. The whales were generally moving west to east in the southern part of Elliott Bay, getting a bit closer to the beach on Alki at times. I thought it was weird at the time since I went out expecting to see one whale [gray] and there was two. One was also much smaller than the other, as well, and I saw their dorsal fins very clearly when they surfaced. Wish I had a more positive ID/photo for you but that's what I saw. -Meagan Maxon

Orcas (NW) off of North Beach today were the T65As, T37s and T34s (total 12 orcas). They took down a harbor seal that had been hiding by the engines of the Maya's whale boat. Whoever was on that boat got quite the show today. Not much post celebration after the hunt/kill. They finally did some breaching long after the hunt when they started messing around with the rhinoceros auklets. Also some engaged in dragging kelp around on their dorsal fins. -Tisa Annette

BIGG'S/TRANSIENT ORCAS - Sun, July 11 - Rosario Strait/Deception Pass (T37As) - …we had a negative tide with a 10ft tidal exchange and the currents at the pass are FAST. I saw boats spinning out there. These currents stopped 2-ton orcas, and believe me these orcas are powerful...They spent approx. 2 hrs fighting it. They would try both the main bridge pass, and then over to Canoe Pass, northend bridge...they finally gave up and swam back east a few miles into a bay. I think Miller Bay, and rested until waters calmed down around 6 pm. It was crazy, it was amazing to watch this. Sun, July 11 - Central to North Puget Sound (T36A2 and T36A3, T65As minus T65A5, T137s) - Let's porpoise - that was the order on a sunny, Sunday afternoon near the Clinton ferry dock when the T65As (minus 65A5 I believe - thanks Bart Rulon), T137s, T36A2 and T36A3 suddenly zipped into high gear after hunting for lunch, whipping through the whitecaps as they propelled themselves at speed through the ferry lanes,. They slackened off the pace as they passed Glendale beach and Possession boat ramp before filtering into Possession Triangle and slipping away south, still tightly grouped. ----The pictures were taken a few miles away from Edmonds on the MV Saratoga, Puget Sound Express, Saturday afternoon around 4:45pm. In rapid order these 11 orcas caught at least one porpoise, and maybe two, south of Possession Point. After circling on their meal(s) for about 30 minutes they celebrated as Bigg's killer whales often do with breaches and cartwheels. T137A, Jack, was particularly breachy (6 times) in this encounter! UNCONFIRMED BALEEN WHALE - Tue, July 6 - Elliott Bay - 17:46 - I've got a baleen whale in Elliott Bay. Saw when it was diving so couldn't tell if gray or humpback. It was off my starboard side; I'm driving the vessel Neptune's Car. I'll update when I see surface again. Follow-up: It was doing the breath hold Olympics. When we saw it, it was heading west out of the bay. I didn't see a full fluke and didn't spot the dorsal so it has me leaning toward gray. But my passengers and I only saw it that once. There was some chatter on the radio from the Kitsap ferries about it, but it must have been doing 30+ minute downtimes. -Joey LaMarche

So fun to unexpectedly see the T037As as they hustled north and out of Admiralty Inlet. These photos are from several viewing spots along the west side, and we kept 'picking' up more orca-dorks along the way. A quick evening dash to Lagoon Point was met with the arrival of the rambunctious T37As intent on hunting down a seal for dinner. Checking out their quarry with numerous spy-hops, their united efforts were soon rewarded as evidenced by numerous gulls swooping for scraps. BIGG'S/TRANSIENT ORCAS - Fri, July 2 - Strait of Georgia (T34s, T37s, T46s) - July 2nd 2021 - Bigg's Killer Whales and Humpback Whales interacting off Texada Island. An amazing encounter with two Humpbacks chasing three matrilines of Bigg's Killer Whales. We were fortunate to come across two humpbacks in close proximity of 13 Bigg's Killer Whales that seemed quite agitated. The humpbacks were following 50 meters behind a group of 13 killer whales tail lobbing and trumpeting. The Bigg's Killer Whales left the area at a high rate of speed and the humpbacks then settled down. We are able to identify one of the Humpbacks as Anvil who frequents the waters of the Salish Sea and has been documented doing the same thing on separate occasions with Bigg's Killer Whales. 18:08 - Whales are in ferry lanes mid-channel as seen from Brighton Beach.
17:57 - Orcas have passed Brighton Beach heading for ferry lanes at a steady pace. T65A was slightly behind or off to the side at one point.
17:16 - Orcas have passed Sandy Point grouped up and close to Whidbey. Southbound toward Clinton.
16:21 - T65As are visible from Seawall Park. Whale bell has been rung. Two visitors from east coast thrilled to see them.
----They're back - the T65As. Once again, the whale bell rang loud and clear at Seawall Park to herald the arrival of the T65As as they passed Langley on their southbound travels in Saratoga Passage, skirting a kayaker just before they rounded Sandy Point as they continued toward the ferry lanes and Possession Sound. 11:04 - They are almost to Sandy Point now. They swam back and picked up A2 so they should all be together now. We have had to flag down multiple private boats for bombing right towards the whales to get them to stop or slow down.
10:45 - Updated location approaching Sandy Point, northbound. T65A2 is hanging behind the other 4 a bit.

At 09:14 Donna Sanders, WSF Marine Ops, emailed to report: CHELAN Master reports the vessel has slowed for 2-3 orca heading NB, mid channel, of the traffic lanes. [Mukilteo/Clinton run - Chelan was just pulling into Clinton terminal at time of email. Sighting may have been bit earlier]

HUMPBACK WHALES - Fri, July 2 - Strait of Georgia - July 2nd 2021 - Bigg's Killer Whales and Humpback Whales interacting off Texada Island. An amazing encounter with two Humpbacks chasing three matrilines of Bigg's Killer Whales. We were fortunate to come across two humpbacks in close proximity of 13 Bigg's Killer Whales that seemed quite agitated. The humpbacks were following 50 meters behind a group of 13 killer whales tail lobbing and trumpeting. The Bigg's Killer Whales left the area at a high rate of speed and the humpbacks then settled down. We are able to identify one of the Humpbacks as Anvil [BCZ-CS513] who frequents the waters of the Salish Sea and has been documented doing the same thing on separate occasions with Bigg's Killer Whales. The families of Bigg's Killer Whales present were the T034's T037's and the T046's. -Ocean EcoVentures Whale Watching - Cowichan Bay & Parksville B.C.

11:57 - Elizabeth Drozda called back to report 2nd group of 2 orcas. She was still watching the first group of 3 about 1/2 mile offshore when she heard whales below her. This 2nd group of 2 are hanging out below along shoreline below here at Sares Head, Sharpes Pt. Park, north of Deception Pass Bridge. They are milling around, looks like they are fishing/feeding.
11:27 - Elizabeth Drozda just called. She's at Sares Head, south of Anacortes watching the whales go by, believes the resident orcas per our alert. The orcas are still north of Deception Pass, somewhat spread out heading south. Only seeing 3 at this time in this group.

10:50-17:07 - Center for Whale Research Encounter #45: "… We made it on scene at the south end of Rosario Strait by 1050 about mid-strait off Watmough Head. The whales were very spread out and foraging. … From the whales we had been seeing, we knew we had the K12, K13, and K14 matrilines present. While we felt confident at that point that the K16s and K21 were not present, we still needed to find the rest of the K14s and K43. We eventually spotted K26 off the flagpole at American Camp. He was also charging up island but then found a fish and stopped to give chase. We briefly saw K14 and K36 inshore up closer to Eagle Point. We then had a couple of backlit whales speed past us heading north. This was K43 and K44 and they started milling too. ….. K12 looked like she might have been chasing a salmon before she continued slowly southeast about a mile northwest of Eagle Point. 09:45 - About 10 orcas southbound in Rosario near Decatur, early reports sound like this may be Southern Residents!!! After a tentative report from a couple days ago in Johnstone Strait we are guessing maybe members of K-Pod, same exact day they showed up last year!
---- After 81 consecutive days of no Southern Residents in the Salish Sea, members of K-Pod returned this morning, one year to the day after they made their return in 2020. Their whereabouts have been unknown since their last visit to the Salish Sea in mid-late February. The whales were picked up this morning heading south in Rosario Strait and made their way over to Haro Strait in the afternoon. We saw members of the K12s, K13s, and K14s (last year just the K12s and K13s were here on July 1). We had a hunch they would show up today after getting a tentative report of them in Johnstone Strait on June 29, again exactly one year after they were documented there in 2020. 17:32 - They seem to be moving southbound now, slowly.
17:29 - We've seen T49C pop up a few times but he hasn't gotten any closer to the 65As yet. They are still milling off the north end of Lagoon Point.
17:05 - They stalled at the north side of Lagoon Point to eat a porpoise. T49C turned around northbound towards them (within a half mile) but then disappeared.
16:09 - Right off Fort Flagler.
16:02 - The 65As are at the north end of Marrowstone Island right now, southbound. T49C is about 4 miles ahead of the 65As.
15:46 - T49C traveling southbound by himself off Marrowstone Island. Viewing from MV Saratoga, Puget Sound Express.
14:20 - They were the T65As. A2 was on the Point Wilson side by himself and the rest of the family (assumed) was on the Whidbey side (1 mile offshore).
