Fri, Mar 25 - Strait of Juan de Fuca (T77 & T77E) - After T77 and T77E broke off from the larger group they had been traveling with in Puget Sound, we caught up with them in Juan de Fuca Strait outside of Port Angeles Friday (3/25) afternoon.  In steady travel mode heading west with purpose, some sudden directional changes and lunges indicated they had an opportune snack.  A gull swooped in for a big prize (T77E is apparently a messy eater) and several others came in for a slick of oil that had formed on the water.  T77 did a double breach in post meal celebration and off they went west again.
These were also "new to me" whales and I had seen T77A a few years ago so knew he was dispersed from his mother and often traveled as a solo whale.  What was astounding is that the rest of her calves dispersed (with the exception of T77E who is now six years old) after the death of T77B a couple of years ago.  Because we know the role of the matriarch and that generally orcas stay together in family pods for life, it leaves wonder and curiosity as to why this family is different.  The more we know, it seems the more we don't. -Debbie Stewart
*
Today we got out on the water with T77 Asja and her youngest, six-year-old T77E Misneach. A few days ago they were hanging out with the T65As and T99s, but they have now split off and the two of them were booking it west in the glassy waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca this afternoon. -Orca Behavior Institute

----Another thing to note, the T65A's spring return to Island waters was on the exact same day as last year. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not, but it definitely is something to note as we get used to the new rhythms of an ever-changing Salish. -Marla Smith

14:55 -
I spotted puffs way out off of the tip of Camano (Brown Point?), and after watching for a few minutes with binoculars, it appears to be two grays (simultaneous blows) slowly working their way down toward Utsalady.
13:30 - I peeked outside a few minutes ago and saw a gorgeous big arching dive complete with tail flip out in the channel straight out from Mariners Cove. This one was heading south, and I didn’t see it again.
Also, up to the north in Skagit Bay, there is another gray spouting a bit. It’s pretty far out (northeast), and I can’t quite figure out which direction it’s going yet. Perhaps these are the two that I saw this morning up in Skagit Bay working their way down the channel.
~11:30 - Update on the grays - there is definitely more than one out there, based on simultaneous blows in different locations. They moved slightly east toward Stanwood and further away from me now, so the puffs got smaller, and I haven’t spotted them for a good ten minutes.
10:50 - Gray in Skagit Bay: I saw a couple of puffs in the distance up in Skagit Bay, northeast of my vantage point here at Mariners Cove. It’s too far to judge any direction yet though, but I’ll let you know if they stop by for snacks. -Marianne Parry

I’ve got a visitor or two at the Happy Meal Mudflats tonight. I’m not positive, but I’m going to say that there are two grays based on the breathing frequency and perceived locations (it’s dark outside).  I think they are coming from the north, have passed Mariners Cove, and are hanging out at the mudflats but might be very slowly working their way southward. I stood outside listening to them for a good 15-20 minutes – so special! -Marianne Parry

14:41 - There is at least one gray, and I suspect two based on how close together the puffs are, heading north past Mariners Cove, but way out in the channel. It’s way too far out for me to see any detail, and I’m never pointing the camera in the right place when I try to guess where they’re going to pop up. One more note about this gray in case it helps with ID: my parents are visiting and my dad says that this gray looked like the one I saw a couple of days ago that I mentioned looked like a log. It presents a longer-than-usual length of its body above the waterline, which seemed different from the arch that we usually see. -Marianne Parry

UNIDENTIFIED SPECIES - Tue, Mar 15 - Columbia River - Just wanted to let you know that I'm 99% sure there was a whale right at the Lewis and Clark Bridge at Longview, WA, this morning, March 15, 2022. It was grey and white and appeared to be as large as a medium sized boat, in fact, there were log trucks parked on the Oregon side, and it was near to the shore there and was comparable to the cabs on those trucks. What was also strange is that there were other dorsal fins surfacing around it, and across the Columbia River. Appeared to be at least two dozen dolphins. -Stephanie Clemons

Today we had beautiful weather and encountered 4 social Gray Whales on MV Saratoga! This lovely cuddle puddle consisted originally of CRC21 "Shackleton", CRC22 "Earhart", and CRC2356! It wasn't long until CRC2362 who was lingering in the distance came over and joined the party! They made their way over toward the northern end of Hat/Gedney Island and along the way displayed beautiful flukes and rainblows! -Justine Buckmaster

SOUTHERN RESIDENT ORCAS - Sat, Mar 12 - Gulf Islands, BC - ~10:30 - My location:  Stoney Hill, Outside Maple Bay, BC (North Cowichan) north entrance of Sansum Narrows facing Saltspring Island. (Lat:  48.803377; Lng:  -123.579548). Sighted a pod on Sat, approximately 1030 hrs. The group was traveling slowly south from the vicinity of Vesuvius Bay, toward Sansum Narrows.  They spent 15 - 20 minutes apparently feeding at the north end of the narrows on the Saltspring Island side of the channel. Quite a bit of breaching and tail slapping. Some side and upside down "floating".  I suspect this is the same group (J pod) seen on Friday. Unfortunately, I didn't get any shots that have good images of distinctive fins or saddles. -Karen Lund

Spotted at 10:45 am in the south end of Holmes Harbor very near the park. Counted 6 whales, including one large male, and it appeared there were 2 calves. Orcas moved very slowly, lots of milling about, spy hopping and tail slapping. Appeared to be feeding as gulls and an eagle were interested when the whales surfaced. Watched them for 40 minutes. Headed north towards Honeymoon Bay where two whale watching vessels arrived to view. Hopefully they can provide more details and photos. -Catherine Drews

11:30 - The orcas
have just cruised past the bottom of our road, north of the Holmes Harbor golf course, heading steadily outbound. At least a dozen seals were grouped up in shallow water close to Freeland beach. Safety in numbers!
11:15 - They are angling slowly north in Holmes Harbor. Had a meal judging by the waiting birds. Lots of spy-hops.
10.45 - They have slowed down, east side of harbor, and appear to be hunting.
10:40 - [T99s] They are in Holmes Harbor proper heading toward Freeland dock at speed, mid channel.
----Wow - whales deep in Holmes Harbor today with the T99s cruising right past the bottom of our road. With the first report of them near Baby Island before doing a disappearing act, we whizzed down to Freeland Park and soon spotted them heading at speed toward the boat ramp - they hadn't wasted any time. They slowed down and changed gear to hunting mode, circling and milling with frequent spy-hops as they angled more toward the east side of Holmes Harbor. Judging by the flurry of gulls overhead they probably had some success before re-grouping and heading back north from whence they came. Cool! Yesterday was another great day on the water, with T99s and three gray whales seen on the Island Explorer 5 (Little Patch by Strawberry Point, and two others seen briefly and unidentified). The photos are from very far away, and don't show much of the dorsal ridge. SOUTHERN RESIDENT ORCAS - Fri, Mar 11 - Gulf Islands, BC - 10:15 - My location:  Stoney Hill, Outside Maple Bay, BC (North Cowichan) north entrance of Sansum Narrows facing Saltspring Island. (Lat:  48.803377; Lng:  -123.579548). Sighted a pod approximately 1015 hrs. The group appeared to be feeding for 30-40 min at the northern mouth of Sansum Narrows, making large sweeps from Saltspring Island across to Maple Bay and back around several times. Lots of tail slapping, some breaching, some spy hopping.  My friend took one photo showing 5 adults on the surface. I have one photo (included) showing a mother and calf. We can say at least there were 5 adults and one calf, although there may have been 1 or 2 more adults.  I heard orca traveling north at 0510 hrs (still very dark) and they also sounded like they were feeding for a short time in the northern mouth of the Narrows before moving on (20-25 blows with some splashing).  Impossible to know if this was the same group. -Karen Lund

Right when we almost turned back to see if the J37s were behind us, Katie saw more whales down the channel toward the west tip of Shaw Island. We went there and, luckily, this turned out to be the J37s. GRAY WHALES - Mon, Mar 7 - N Saratoga Passage - 20:00-21:00+ - A neighbor alerted us to a gray feeding right outside tonight, so we just spent a good half hour down on the beach in the dark listening to our big gray friend splashing about and "raiding the frig" - lol. It finally got too cold, and the whale did not seem to be going anywhere at all, so we reluctantly went back inside. Tough to walk away though!
15:25 - I wish I had more info on this one - it came and went really quickly! One gray cruised by fairly close to shore and I thought maybe it was heading for the mudflats (just south of Mariners Cove), but then it simply vanished. I heard a few puffs, which is why I was able to spot it at all, but it only surfaced for a moment so I got just barely caught a glimpse of its back. It was low tide, so it must have misjudged snack-time. -Marianne Parry

*
GRAY WHALES - Sun, Mar 6 - Saratoga Passage - 17:02 - They are both heading towards Camano Island. Added: It might be three since the one I lost was heading southbound and further away from me. Once I realized I had 2 near the base water tower, I thought he snuck back but maybe 723 left and the other 2 stayed. 1 of the greys looked to be much bigger in size. I left them heading east towards Camano Island.
16:19 - Lost one, the second one is heading (west) to [toward, per Anya's map] Penn Cove.
16:09 - Saw 2 grey whales from Crescent Harbor. Between Whidbey Island and Camaro. Showed me 2 tales and went down. Looks to be aiming towards Whidbey. -Anya Sika
*
14:03 - [grays]
Spotted them from Madrona on Camano. It looks like they're close to Shangri-la on Whidbey, still heading north, and there's a research boat with them (assuming research? Black & red zodiac). Added: If Marilyn is seeing Lucyfer at Hidden Beach and Anya was seeing two further north at the same time I wonder if there were 3 up there together. When I was viewing from Madrona, I kept saying it looked like there were 3 spouts, but it was hard to tell because I was so far away and, of course, they never surface at the same time. -Sara Montour Lewis
*
16:21 -
Now coming near Hidden Beach. Southbound. Added: I thought I saw 3 when you [Sara Montour Lewis] posted from Madrona and research boat out there. I had just showed up at Shangri La. Watched for about 15 min then totally lost them. There was only 2 when I was at Hidden Beach earlier when they were about a few miles north of there.
16:15 - The one gray just fluked again, now nearing Cama Beach mid channel, southbound.
16:00 - just pulled up to Hidden Beach. Saw one fluke middish channel in line with Indian Beach, Camano. Appearing southbound.
13:24 - 13 min downtime. Def moving northbound. Still viewing from Hidden Beach. My best guess would be mid-channel north of Onamac Pt. (Camano) and Shangri La Shores (Whidbey).
13:00 - 2 grays, assuming 723 and 531 between Onamac and Whidbey Shangri La? Cannot tell direction but could be northbound still per previous report. I'm viewing from Hidden Beach. Loooooooong downtimes! -Marilyn Armbruster

---- On Sunday, March 6, we spotted gray whales CRC 22 (Earhart), 531, and 723 (Lucyfer) in addition to spotting 2356 and 2362 again! We didn't see Earhart (CRC22) last year because she likely had a calf in 2021. Researchers determined she was pregnant using drone photography the last time Earhart was here in 2020 so we didn't expect her in 2021. The moms skip visiting Puget Sound when they have a calf, so it was exciting to see her back again in 2022 especially knowing she likely brought another gray whale into the world last year. Little Patch (CRC53) was the first gray whale to return this season, once again. For the second year in a row, he arrived in December. -photos (531, 22, 723)
*
UNIDENTIFIED SPECIES - Sun, Mar 6 - NPS/Admiralty Inlet - I am on the bluff just south of [Bush Point] and hearing blows. Heard one, thinking it might be gray, then heard again, several times. Sounds like may be going north. -Susan Berta, Orca Network

["Your photo of the fluke top is 22 Earhart. With your fluke of 531, Sara's photo of 723 right side, and your right-side share on Orca Network of the unknown whale, you two were tracking 4 whales on March 5th, not 2 as thought. This is a great reminder of the importance of photo-documentation!" -Alisa Lemire Brooks, Orca Network]

*
16:45-17:35 -
Center for Whale Research Encounter #13: "The distant group turned out to be exactly who was being looked for as it was J40 traveling with the J37s and they were maybe a half mile east of Kelp Reef. J37s new calf was sighted immediately although it took several surfacings to properly photograph the quick little whale. The calf appears to be pretty young as it is still a little lumpy. The dorsal fin was upright which means the calf is over a day old but, due to its "lizard head" look, it is probably younger than a couple of weeks. Usually, new calves start filling out behind their blowhole after their third week. The calf appears to have a closed saddle on its left side with a hint of a black spine and a tiny finger." 17:45-18:10 -
At least 2 miles out J27 Blackberry circled and traveled back and forth plying the same location, perhaps hunting, until the sun set. Photographed from shore, cropped and enlarged.
15:10-15:50 - Approximately 11-12? members of J-Pod northbound, 1 mile south of Landbank, about 1/3-1/2 mile offshore. The first group of 4 had in the center J37 Hy'Shqa with her new calf J59. In attendance was an unidentified male. Following this group, came a second tight group with J41 Eclipse and calf J58 Crescent along with J42 Echo and J19 Shachi. Later another group relaxed just south of Edwards Point (south of Landbank), including J47 Notch. They slapped the waters with their flukes while rolling and drifting on their backs.
12:00-12:07 - 3 members of J-Pod silhouetted against the fog bank 1-1/2 to 2 miles out, veering away from shore traveling southwest. I lost sight of them in the fog. -Michelline Halliday, SJI

Tue, Mar 1 - N Saratoga Passage - 15:30 - We were treated to two grays feeding outside Mariners Cove a few minutes ago! It looked like they were feeding near the marina entrance (it sounds like they came from the south but I missed them when they went by the first time), and then one went out into the channel and the other kept feeding but moving back down south toward the Happy Meal Mudflats. The one that went out in the channel is looping back in toward Whidbey but was still pretty far out the last time I saw it. The one feeding at the mudflats moved along fairly quickly and I'm guessing they will meet up again at Polnell (but who knows - lol). -Marianne Parry

UNCONFIRMED SPECIES - Tue, Mar 1 - Possession Sound - Judy and Tom Nowak called again to report seeing whale(s) in Possession Sound between Hat Island and Tulalip area 4 of the past 6 days. Still think best description is sperm whale (see Friday Feb 25 report), still convinced not grays even though we've shared that those are the only whales being confirmed in that area.
