Sun, Jun 30 - San Juans (T65Bs, T99s & others) - 19:51 - Three to four orca, middle of Bellingham Bay, just traveled in likely drifting towards Lummi shore drive. However, the whales went north up Saratoga Passage so I hopped on the ferry and ran all the way to Holmes Harbor where these whales played for over an hour. They continued north where they made a beautiful pass just north of Hidden Beach. So amazing to see the little baby. So much wildlife today! Not many boats around, I think Scuttles was happy to see us as he came to us and passed under the boat! Thank you PSE. -photos by Jill Hein, June 26, 2024

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS (fish-eating ecotype) -
Sun, Jun 23 - Active Pass/Haro Strait (J Pod & K Pod; L Pod in Strait of Juan de Fuca) - K37 Rainshadow - The incredible season continues with the Southern Residents around much of the time in sharp contrast to recent years when they were mostly absent from April to July. J-Pod was traversing the Salish Sea with the L54 sub-group, and then on June 23 members of all three pods showed in the Strait of Juan de Fuca! Js and Ks continued east and made a visit to the west side of San Juan Island that afternoon, where OBI Board member Cindy Hansen caught up with them. Here's one of her photos of K37 Rainshadow, showing a new nick he's sporting on his fin! -Orca Behavior Institute -photo by Cindy Hansen, June 23, 2024

Thanks to friends on Pender we knew J’s were on their way north after spending the day with K’s and most of L’s near Victoria. Fortunately for us, they decided to take Active Pass and not Trincomali Channel. They came extremely close to shore against an ebb tide. Link to FB reel. Excerpt from the Center for Whale Research Encounter #58: “Based on their trajectory and the time that had passed, Mark calculated that the whales might be on approach to William Head. At 1252, after pushing their way through some unfavourable water, Brendon spotted the first set of fins passing along the shoreline at William Head - just as Mark had predicted. The whales appeared to be in a cohesive formation, yet unlike Js and Ks observed earlier, the L pod whales exhibited a varied composition. Initially, the first photographed group included L55, L83, L90, L105, L118, and the L72s. Their movements appeared scattered as the whales were spread out across the entrance to Pedder Bay, but the majority of whales were predominantly southbound against the incoming flood. At 1258, L55 spyhopped near Mike 1’s port side, followed by the other six whales moving southward behind her. Shortly thereafter, another group surfaced behind, consisting of the L77s along with L22, L25, and L87. Meanwhile, the remaining members of the L55s moved in parallel, while the L94s and L47s remained closer to the Vancouver Island shoreline. All matrilines were represented, except for the L54s, who had been traveling with J pod in the preceding weeks.” Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #58.
*
Excerpt from the Center for Whale Research Encounter #57: “At 1122, many tightly-knit whales surfaced together several hundred metres ahead of Mike 1 along Beaumont Shoals, heading northeast. This group comprised the entirety of J pod, with all matrilines in a tight formation. The most southern subset of whales were the J17s - including sprouting males J44 and J47 - followed by the J19s at the northern end. The pod maintained a steady eastward course towards the western side of San Juan Island, with no observed social or predation behaviour. At 1130, shortly after photographing the Js, all of K pod began to catch up to the leading whales. Mike 1 remained stationary as J pod continued ahead of them, opting to remain in place for K pod to pass in favourable lighting conditions. Similarly, K pod was also tightly grouped, with exceptions noted for K16 and K35, who were the most eastern whales leading the formation. Among the trailing whales were the K12s, with K37 notably observed sporting a new nick and superficial damage to his dorsal fin….” Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #57.

Sat, Jun 22 - Haro Strait (J Pod) - Excerpt from the Center for Whale Research Encounter #56: “It took some searching, but the team finally saw whales in the distance between Middle and Hein Bank. The team got in range of the whales at 1153 and started the encounter. The first two whales the team found were J27 and J39, travelling together back towards San Juan Island. After a couple passes and behavior logs on the two brothers, the team moved off towards a larger group they had spotted to the northwest. There, the team found the J22s and J14s in a tight formation, also heading towards San Juan Island. Also in the area, but more spread out, were members of the J17 matriline: J44, J53, and J46. After a few minutes, these J17s joined in the formation with the other two matrilines….” Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #56.

BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) -
Sat, Jun 22 - Strait of Juan de Fuca (T51) - Excerpt from Center for Whale Research Encounter #55: As Mark and Fin navigated east through Miner's Channel following an early morning stroll at Sidney Spit, Mark spotted the unmistakable T051 at 0827, surfacing less than half a mile off Mike 1's port beam. The mature bull, estimated to be in his early forties, was travelling east towards Mandarte Island. It must have been his final dive of the series, as Mark was unable to re-sight the whale for what seemed like an eternity, though it was likely only four minutes before he resurfaced, heading northeast towards Gooch Island. Mark anticipated a thrilling morning observing T051 hunting seals among the kelp, as after a quick pair of breaths T051 was seen heading southwest towards the seal-laden reef at Mandarte Island's west end…” Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #55.

BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) -
Fri, Jun 21 - Boundary Pass (T51) - Excerpt from Center for Whale Research Encounter #54: “We were working in the office when we heard that the lone adult male Bigg’s killer whale, T51, was found in Boundary Pass. While T51 has visited the area several times in the past, he isn’t in the San Juans all that often. He was heading southwest towards us, so we decided to go out and take a quick look at him. We headed down to Snug Harbor and left in the boat at 1114. After heading through Johns Pass, we arrived on scene just a little northeast of Johns Pass at 1040. T51 was traveling at a medium pace and had been heading southwest until he was about a quarter mile off the north side of Johns Island. He then turned northwest and began paralleling the John and Stuart Islands shorelines. We got one photo-ID pass on his left side and then ended the encounter at 1050 off Johns Pass…” Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #54.

BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) -
Thu, Jun 20 - Haro Strait (T65A5 & T86A1s) Excerpt from Center for Whale Research Encounter #53: “Michael was doing maintenance work on KCB III when he got a text from Rachel that a group of killer whales had just passed the CWR heading north. Taylor took a few distant shore photos and came up with a preliminary ID of the T86A1s and T65A5. The team geared up and left Snug at 1056. The whales had just made it past Kellet Bluff when the team arrived on scene at 1109. The team positioned themselves for a photo ID pass, and got photos to confirm Taylor's initial IDs of the group. The whales travelled in a tight formation, heading consistently north offshore of Henry Island…” Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #53.

The T65As have been in the Salish Sea off and on since mid-March, but have spent most of their time in Puget Sound. It had been a while since we had caught up with the T65As, but over the last week we've gotten to see them a few times! Originally they were traveling without both T65A3 Amir and T65A5 Indy who had been off on their own adventures, but as of yesterday [06/16] T65A3 has reunited with the "core" family. Here's a short highlight video from Jason of one of our encounters that included mom T65A Artemis and her other three offspring: T65A2 Oooxjaa, T65A4 Ellifrit, and T65A6 Callisto. All the kiddos are getting so big! Link to video. -Orca Behavior Institute

07:45 - I'm watching a group of orcas between Mariner’s Cove/Whidbey and Utsalady/Camano. They appeared to approach from the south, but have been milling about in place for 20 minutes or so and are now moving south again. I would guess probably five to seven of them - one big male, at least one little tiny one (maybe two), and various sizes in between. I'm not familiar with orca behavior, but I'm going to guess that they're feeding since they were milling about and sometimes spyhopping, a breach or two, and seemed pretty excited. Nice way to start the day! -Marianne Parry

Tue, Jun 11 - Haro Strait (T34s, T37, T37Bs, T65A3) - Excerpt from the Center for Whale Research Encounter #48: “A few hundred yards to the east of them we found T34 and T34B traveling together. We got some backlit lefts on them before moving to the final pair and furthest west whales we could see. This was T37B and T37B3 and they were traveling slowly north together about 150 yards to the northwest of T37B1 and T65A3. We got a few rights on those two before deciding to call it quits. While we still hadn’t seen T37 and T34A who we might have expected to be there, the water was lumpy enough to discourage a whale search. We ended the encounter at 1130 about ¾ of a mile east of Mandarte Island. Most of the rest of the T65As had been found earlier somewhere off the east end of Spieden Island in much calmer water…” -Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #48.

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS (fish-eating ecotype) -
Sat, Jun 8 - Haro Strait (J Pod & L54s) - He wasn't quite as acrobatic as Mr. Notch, but it was just as exciting to see L88 Wavewalker when the Southern Residents went north past Lime Kiln. Wavewalker is the last living member of the L2 matriline, and he's taken to traveling with the L54s. Interestingly, the four whales in the L54 sub-group were the only ones NOT present when all the other Southern Residents made a San Juan Island appearance on May 27th. This kept it from being a true superpod, which is defined as all members of the Southern Resident Community traveling together. By June 1st, all the Southern Residents went west again, so how interesting is it that when J-Pod returned yesterday they brought the "missing" whales with them? For whatever reason, the L54s are the most infrequent visitors to inland waters, so it is always a special treat to see them. -Orca Behavior Institute -photo by Monika Wieland Shields, June 8, 2024

Sat, Jun 8 - San Juans (T101s) - T101 Reef - Out on a beautiful day on IE with Susan and Uko Gorter - Stopped at Bird Rocks to see Oyster Catchers, a sea otter in the kelp, and then headed toward San Juan Island where we found the T101's up Cattle Pass, heading toward Griffith Bay and the lighthouse. Mom is T101 Reef (b. approx. 1969), and two grown sons, T101A Rush (b. 1993) and T101B Lagoon (b. 1997). They cruised close by the rocks and headed out toward Salmon Bank. But they circled back by Whale Rocks, possibly finding a snack, moved north a bit and circled back to Griffith Bay. We then took a nice look at humpbacks Big Mama, and Goose, slowly traveling south down Cattle Pass together… no good fluke shots but so lovely to see! Another lovely day with lovely whales! -photos by Bonnie Gretz, June 8, 2024

We've been lucky lately with orcas in our backyard, Holmes Harbor. Following a leisurely stroll down Saratoga Passage past Hidden Beach, the T137s turned into Holmes Harbor and upped the pace until they were about as far south as they could go. After turning back north they breezed past under the golf course, barely surfacing before they were out of sight once more. It was a rare treat to see this family so close to home, yet another happy memory to be treasured. -photos by Sandy Pollard, June 1, 2024
