March 31
SOUTHERN RESIDENTS - Tue, Mar 31 - 08:45 (approx.) - Hi! J pod (J27) went northbound through Active Pass this morning. They continued north in the Strait of Georgia. -Rachelle Hayden

Tue, Mar 31 - Puget Sound (T65As & T137s). Hours had passed since Howie had eyes on the orcas in Admiralty so I thought I'd take a peek from Richmond Beach, while on a grocery run, to see if the pod headed south and if could get any IDs. About 13:45 I pulled over side of the road above Kayu Kayu Ac park and few minutes later spotted a female/calf pair heading southbound on the east side of the channel just off the park. A male, further east in the channel, was trailing by several minutes. At the time it appeared to me it was T65A2 (which I could later confirm from video). He was lazily making his way south on his own. A 2nd larger male was more mid channel. Before leaving the area, I could confirm at least 6 orcas, including at least 2 males. In addition, but couldn't confirm at the time, I was thinking I saw at least a few others, mix of females/juvies more mid channel.

Late afternoon while down south, I decided to try and find the whales again in the event they continued south, as well. I did find them in Central Puget Sound at first grouped, but the males were weaving in and out of the core group alone or together, and for short time one male and juvie were traveling together. I couldn't confirm all IDs on sight, but looking over my video later (and few crappy images) could see some of the T65As and T137s at least. I cannot confirm all individuals present due to distance, but numbers and make up fits probability it was T65As and T137s. I left the whales continuing south somewhere around Des Moines/Point Robinson area just after 19:00. (The next day April 1st the T65As (minus T65A5) and T137s were confirmed traveling together in Puget Sound so is likely same configuration I saw on 31st - alb). -Alisa Lemire Brooks, Orca Network

Tue, Mar 31 - Admiralty Inlet to Central Puget Sound - 13:00 - A pair of orcas were about half a mile north of Edmonds near the mainland side at 1 pm. Medium sized. Maybe juveniles. They seemed to have stuck around for a while in the vicinity of an area here where I've seen greys and a humpback feeding in the past. Basically, straight out into the sound on a line with SR 527, about 400-800 yards off shore. -Vern Francissen

10:20 - I last saw whales about 10:20 heading east, midchannel. I'm assuming they're Ts, from the low number (about 6) and the way they milled around under a bird ball for maybe 10 min. I saw one adult male. [from south of Bush Point, Whidbey Island]. South of the buoy, eastbound.

09:22 - Camille Hartley called I'm on Bush Point just to the south, seem to be orcas, 4-5. Looks like couple of males...at least one male. Staying in one place, seem to be fishing.

Tue, March 31- Similk Bay/N Skagit Bay - Garry, ON stranding coordinator took a call from Joe who lives on Slice St in Anacortes reporting large gray and smaller one that has been probably feeding in the shallows for a few hours. Not in distress and tide is now coming in.

13:38 (time of post) - On my way home, I stopped at Long Point. I was the only person there. I immediately spotted a gray whale not far from shore, and it turned out to be a friend of mine - #44 Dubknuck. We've met here in this exact spot years prior and it was good to see him again. -Rachel Haight

Fri, Mar 27 - Hood Canal - 16:30 - What is believed to have been a gray whale was sighted on a rare journey far up Hood Canal, around Big Bend at Annas Bay and up into Lynch Cove. At approximately 4:30PM, I witnessed the back half of a whale that had surfaced for air 1/4 mile off the south shore of Hood Canal. The sighting occurred 3.5 miles northeast of Twanoh State Park, as the whale swam southeastward, toward the park. This location places the whale within approx 4 miles of the far end of the Canal. The whale seemed to be alone, making me wonder if s/he was off on an adventurous solo journey - way off the usual track. In my 56 years of time on this stretch of salt water, neither I nor anyone I know has confirmed a whale sighting up here. Very Excited in Happy Hollow, Steve Brennan

11:13 - killer whales in Hood Canal. We just spotted 5 Bigg's "Transient" orcas just north of Foulweather Bluff. We were motoring on our s/v Polaris when we saw that distinctive dorsal fin pop up. Put the boat into neutral immediately, but they swam right in front of us, not more than 20 feet off our bow. It happened today around 11:13 am. They were traveling W-NW toward Oak Bay. We are so blessed! Will send pictures and video in hopes that you can identify the pod. Thanks! -Tamara Miller

Thu Mar 26 - Elliott Bay - Donna with WSF Marine Ops called. She just got a call from MV Wenatchee who reports seeing one gray whale as they were heading into Seattle. They saw the whale surface once, but it hadn't come back up yet. Whale was to the north in Elliott Bay near Pier 90.

13:50 - We received a call from Steve Hipskin who reports seeing 2, possibly 3, gray whales, mid channel, directly out from Race Road. They are on Mussel Beach Road. Whales are milling back and forth. Spouts and little bit of body observed. Whales have been there for probably 10-15 minutes.

16:14 - Just saw a beautiful sighting of a pod of Orcas, including the white/gray orca, off of Jefferson Beach in Kingston. UNIDENTIFIED KILLER WHALES - Tue, Mar 24 - Four orcas northbound in Dabob Bay on April 24th at 7:30. About a dozen seals southbound close to the western shore in that time frame also. Haven't seen any sightings since. Picture probably isn't too helpful. -Lynn Stewart

GRAY WHALES - Tue, Mar 24 - Elliott Bay - 17:40 - On March 24 at 5:40pm saw a spout and a whale breech in Elliott Bay between the Edge Water Hotel and Victoria Clipper slip). I believe it was only one whale and it went north along the shoreline of Myrtle Edwards Park. The whale seemed to turn back south and follow the shoreline back toward the city. Never in my 11 years living in Belltown have I ever seen a whale - I was flipping out! It was amazing! --Yes, it was a large whale. --By breach I mean the whale broke the surface - I saw it break the surface maybe 10-12 times as I followed. --I didn't notice a dorsal fin. -Liz Chase Abbott

Mon, Mar 23 - Northern Salish Sea - 15:45 (approx.) - #chiefwhalespotter and I followed the 4 gangs as they headed N/W in Discovery with a heavy ebb current. T063, T065, T090s, T099s, and T100s were present during this encounter. I have never photographed T063 with T090 before, there was much swordplay and T099C spent most of the time with those two. They all slid through Seymour Narrows at 10 knots with the last of the ebb then finished off their socialization just above Browns Bay. As the tide turned to flood and a big push of the current rolled past us there was a distinct split in the 4 gangs. The T100s and T090s hesitated then headed N/W and the T099s with T063 and T065 headed South very fast with the new flood current. We traveled with them through Seymour Narrows at 12 knots and left them to head home! Sun Mar 23 - Hood Canal - Hello, at approximately 10:30am, I spied what looked like a juvenile gray whale in an area of Hood Canal about 3 miles east of Union, WA. It was swimming westward (outbound) within 100 ft of shore and came up for air twice before I lost sight of it. I am not a whale expert, but I will do my best to describe what I saw. Details:
--Definitely a cetacean. I saw it spout from the blowhole twice.
--No major dorsal fin, so I don't think it was an orca or a dolphin
--Color was medium gray with lighter mottling
--It looked long and skinny but appeared juvenile based on size. If I had to guess on length, I would say 12 to 15 feet
--It arched its back before diving but I didn't see the tail

This all in the 14:15-14:30 period. Did see them all continue steady southbound with last sighting around 14:40 south of the ferry lanes. From my car at Elliott Bay Marina, Magnolia.
14:30 - Pod of 5-6 just crossed through Bainbridge/Seattle ferry lanes steady southbound, threading the ferries. MV Tacoma slowed earlier for the group. We alerted WSF; they also got a report of one southbound orca off Restoration Point, around 2:20, ahead of this group.
14:15 - Who I believe is a lead group east side of channel out from Elliott Bay Marina includes two bulls steady skirting outer Elliot Bay, southbound.
12:47 - Two groups: in at least 2 groups, same general areas as first two posts.

March 21/John Judy continued: We stayed with #22 Earhart and #21 Shackleton for quite a long time. They meandered very slowly, sometimes closer to the island, sometimes closer to the shore, but generally traveling north up between Hat Island and the Mainland. The speed was so slow at times they appeared to be almost standing still, just floating to the surface to blow and then dropping back down. I missed one very significant event with the camera. (That unfortunately is when the cookies were being passed around.) About 2:30 PM the whales very suddenly accelerated their speed. One whale did a half breach followed by a full breach. While not on my camera that photo will forever be imbedded in my mind. After the breach the whales made a sharp direction change to the SE and resumed their original slow travel speed. It appeared they might have been headed toward the Snohomish Delta to feed. It was approaching high tide. We did not stay with them long enough to verify that is actually what they were doing. During our time with Earhart and Shackleton, I managed some nice fluke photos of Earhart showing both sides of her tail. In the first, Shackleton can be seen beside Earhart. -John Judy

March 21/John Judy continued: #22 "Earhart" and #21 "Shackleton" gave some ladies in a boat a pretty fabulous drive by. First Earhart showed her dorsal while Shackleton made his blow. I would add these ladies where good responsible whale watchers. a) the telephoto lens makes the whales look closer than they may have actually been. b) they had their motor off and where drifting the whole time. We were scanning for them and picked up two whales out in deep water traveling towards us. They were traveling slowly and turned around the SE corner of Hat Island changing their direction of travel from E to N. Fri, Mar 20 - Center for Whale Research encounter near Moresby Island: "... At 0953, as they rounded Pelorus Point, they saw a group of killer whales off their bow coming towards them. They put the brakes on, and Mark immediately recognized the T010's and T049A's as they completed their last breath before going into a long dive. As Mike 1 trolled along back to the south waiting for the next sequence, Mark spotted more animals behind them at the north end of Moresby Island. ... Mike 1 and T049A2 arrived in unison to see T063, T065, the T049B's, and the T071's milling about in a social group." DOLPHINS - Fri, March 20 - 13:00 - Pretty sure these are long-beaked common dolphins. They played in our bow wake today just east of the north end of Harstine Island, in South Sound - about 1pm. Center for Whale Research encounter near Sooke, B.C., Strait of Juan de Fuca: "... At 1618 they received another second hand report from Paul that a group of east bound killer whales were spotted from shore near Otter Point. Mike 1 turned around and headed that way and Paul departed his dock and located the reported whales within a half mile of the Sooke bluffs a few minutes before Mark and Val arrived at 1700. They quickly confirmed the T010's, T063 and T065 along with the T086A's and another unidentified matriline of 3 or 4 individuals later to be confirmed as the T068B's. ..." Center for Whale Research encounter with T49As and T71s: "... This group was doing all sorts of behaviors-very few of them fitting nicely into our behavior categories. A few of the older whales were loosely spread within 100 yards of the play group. Another pair of sub-adults were rolling around together a few dozen yards to the side of the younger whales. At least one of these two was a male. The transients turned out to be the T49As and the T71s-11 whales in total. ..." MINKE WHALES - Thu, Mar 19 - We think we saw a minke just off the shore near Glendale Beach about 30 min ago [~16:45]. I tried to get a photo but it was too far away....we saw its back a few times & back fin. At first, we thought it was a porpoise. It looked black from a distance. We've seen Grey, Orca, porpoise, sea lion, seal...this looked different but hey, who knows? Didn't see any blow. -Tammy Evans

Thu Mar 19 - Saratoga Passage - Call from Allyson who lives on Elger Bay, Camano Island: "...sitting at table doing whale spotting been seeing increase in gray whales. I am staring directly at Baby Island. We saw about 25-30 blows last night (18th) it was exciting and wonderful, assume it was grays. Today (19th) at 1:27 was staring at direction of Elger Bay towards the point at the park (Camano Isl. SP) and saw a blow convinced it was orca today, close to shore. Wed, Mar 18 - We had a nice surprise today, with the passage of a large (spread-out) orca pod traveling in the Strait of Georgia in front of a beautiful snowy mountain backdrop. From Mayne Island. Rachelle Hayden on Galiano tells me also that she thinks this is the J pod... it was quite stretched along a long line, not bunched together.. But I did see probably 6 orcas, give or take 1.. Today, J-Pod (salmon feeding orcas) visited Friday Harbor. What a delight to see them socializing and playing as they meandered down San Juan Channel. I am told by local researchers that they look pretty healthy right now, which is so great to hear, given the challenges they face with prey availability. I really thought today would be about going out to find the Bigg's killer whales that have been going through for the last few days. Nope. Enter J Pod. They came down President Channel into San Juan Channel for their usual circuit. They cruised in, with J31 and J56 being the first orcas we saw. They spread out wide and maybe going out to the ocean? They were almost to the harbor when an orca did a couple of pectoral fin slaps, then J40 Suttles did at least four belly flops and it was, "About Face!". They did their u-turn, [J27] Blackberry did a nice tail slap with [J26] Mike and company, and happy hour kicked in. No social distancing, no take out only, just a lot of family time. J53 Kiki popped up with salmon remnants hanging from her teeth. Cuddling got serious and four of the five are J40 Suttles, J42 Echo, J46 Star and J53 Kiki (lots of help from Sara Hysong-Shimazu, who is amazing with her observations and helps put together the picture of how the extended family of J Pod is interacting). "In these strange dystopian times, yesterday's adventure was a welcome reminder of the wonderful world of whales and nature, with transient orcas and gray whales in and around Whidbey Island. Our first encounter was with the T46s and T122 (we believe) making their way north in Saratoga Passage as a flock of Trumpeter swans flew directly overhead, followed by sighting of a gray whale exhaling under a bluff as the orcas trended toward Oak Harbor. Our return trip was equally inspiring, encountering three gray whales traveling together north in Saratoga Passage beyond Baby Island, trending toward Hidden Beach. 11:46 - I have two gray whales & think I might have heard a 3rd up on the S end of the Snohomish delta across from Jetty Island. They are actively feeding at high tide in no more than 10 or 12 feet of water. I'm seeing lots of fin waves and surface disturbance. Mon, Mar 16 - 18:00 - We saw two or three orcas in Penn Cove this evening. They were heading into the cove around 6:00 pm. They stayed in front of the Coupeville Wharf for a while and headed out of the cove around 7:30. It looked like one larger dorsal fin and at least one smaller fin. Thank you, Noelle Boilek

Sun, Mar 15 (Strait of Juan de Fuca) Center for Whale Research Encounter #15: "... The bull surfaced nearby and was confirmed to be T010C, so it was assumed that his mom T010 was the second whale. Sure enough, after ~10 minutes tracking the large male a second animal appeared just ahead of him, milling in place. With the distinctive notch near the base of her dorsal fin T010 was confirmed. The two whales continued working the area, apparently after a seal, though no other marine mammal was ever observed. ..." See CWR Encounter #15 for full encounter summary and photos.

SPECIES UNCONFIRMED - Sun, Mar 15 - We were at Lime Kiln State Park yesterday (Mar 15) and saw a few blows. This was around 5:30-6ish. They were off the coast about 500 meters away. We never saw a fluke but their backs made me think they were greys. Have greys been spotted there recently? Otherwise I'm not sure what they were!...I think about 4-5 individuals, did not see any dorsal fins, they were grey/black, they never did a full breach so I'm not sure of length. -Lizzy Grace

I just saw 2 whales in front of my home, roughly 2 miles away from Theler Wetlands in Belfair on South Shore of Hood Canal. About 11:20 am 3/13. They were traveling towards the wetlands. They were not Orcas, much larger than Orca. They were not humpbacks in size...much smaller, with barnacles on the face. Sadly I could not identify exactly what they were. -Heela Patel

Ty Tuin called at 8:30 to report gray whale observed at 07:40: Lives at Mariner Cove, North Whidbey. He and his brother were standing out at the rocky head at the end of marina, saw the spout come up out of the water (initially thinking porpoise or dolphin). Eventually once closer realized it was a whale, pretty big in range of 30 feet. Whale traveling northeast along the coast moving really slow, chilling, just cruising along. Think gray because gray in color, barnacles, ridges on back heading towards tail, it did not have a recognizable fin of humpback, was smoother with boney ridges. J Pod is absolutely fascinating to watch as they seem to use different areas for different purposes. San Juan Channel seems to be their playground and we just sat out there watching with researchers and others as they socialized. They look really healthy, baby Tofino is spunky, Nova is full of energy and Kiki's family is taking good care of her. J16, J26, Mt. Baker, J27, J31, J56, J27, and J36, "J51 Nova during his breach fest". Hope this comes as a nice diversion from our current normal. -April Ryan

I've attached some photos of an encounter with J Pod this evening, 3.9.20, just south of Yellow and Low Islands in the upper portion of San Juan Channel. The following photos are of J16 Slick, J26 Mike, and J36 Alki. Among others seen were J22 Oreo and J38 Cookie, J27 Blackberry, J42 Echo, J39 Mako, J46 Star, and J19 Shachi. Others were too distant for saddle patch photos, and I am not positive if L87 Onyx was traveling with them tonight, or not. They were moving north through San Juan Channel between San Juan Island and Shaw (closer to Shaw), and they seemed to be moving slowly (roughly 3-4 knots). The first whales we saw were the J16s traveling slowly southeast toward San Juan Channel. J36 detached from the rest of the J16s and moved on ahead of the other three. Another whale was about a mile to the southeast of the J16s, and other whales could be seen spread out over a mile ahead of us in the White Rock area. ..." J26. 13:30 - Back on 2/28/20 I reported 2 Grays feeding off our high bluff at Maple Grove on the north end of Camano Island. I'm happy to report that they have been almost daily visitors since. Last night while standing on the edge of our bluff watching the "Worm Moon" and marveling at how bright silver Mt. Baker was, a lone Gray started blowing right below my feet. Today was another banner day... while out spring gardening near the edge of our bluff at about 1:30pm, I had the joy of observing 1 gray, several seals, a sea lion and a couple of otters all in the same area just off our beach! COASTAL KILLER WHALES - Wed, Mar 4 - A 7-minute sighting from 1259 -1336 of one big male and two young males or two females or one of each. Two miles to the west of me (at [Pt. Arena lighthouse). They seem to have arrived from the SE right out of the glare. They circled around slowly taking short dives while making a circle. Then just vanished. Perhaps to the NW with a very long dive.
