When they got within a quarter-mile of Secretary Island, J38, J22, and J37 started to quicken the pace, almost high speed porpoising for a minute as though they were chasing salmon. J51 did three breaches as he and J58 passed within a few metres of the kelp bed on the south side of the island. …" [See CWR Encounter #61 https://www.whaleresearch.com/2021-61 for full summary and

19:36-19:45 - Changing direction at Pile Point and traveling north, they passed my location as the sun set. They moved quickly and were a bit farther out and soon enough could be heard on the Lime Kiln hydrophone to the north.
18:00-18:15 - L54, L108, L117 and L88 southbound a 1/4 mile from shore, at Edwards Point. In windy choppy conditions, at first I only saw two orcas but as they passed me the group came closer together and I counted 4. Varied surface behavior included a half-breach and multiple fluke lobs. Matriarch L54 Ino, L108 Coho with a handsome wave along his fin, L117 Keta and L88 Wave Walker.

15:40 - L54s southbound near Kellett Bluff!
----After spending several days up in the Strait of Georgia, the L54 sub-group of L-Pod made their way back down Haro Strait this afternoon and evening. This group is made up of just four whales: L54 Ino, her sons L108 Coho and L117 Keta, and the adult male L88 Wavewalker who is the last living member of his matriline. Even with just the four of them, the behavioral differences between the two ecotypes are so striking. The L54 sub-group was super surface active all evening, with breaches, tail slaps, spyhops, cartwheels, and dorsal fin slips as they made their way south. They were also very chatty on the hydrophones! Shortly before sunset they all grouped up and made their way quickly back north, perhaps heading back up to the Fraser? Even though it was a super windy afternoon, we no longer take any time we get to spend in the presence of the Southern Residents for granted, and we are so grateful to have spent a few hours with them. -Orca Behavior Institute
*
They were a long way away, but here are three images from this evening at the Land Bank. L54s. Wave Walker is the the big male. -James Mead Maya

07:00 - Bruce Bunich called to report orca: "Spotted a big male with huge dorsal, he came right up in front of me yesterday (Aug 30) at 7am off Norwegian Point. I was fishing for salmon in waders; my friend down the beach was yelling & waving his arms; he is a quiet guy. I looked, didn't know what he was saying, but was yelling get out of the water, get out of the water. Then next thing you know a big killer whale came up about 20-25 feet in front of me heading toward Point No Point from Norwegian Pt. Afterwards, friend said he thought I was a goner, fin was like torpedo headed straight at me. I think he must have been chasing salmon or seal. He came right at me. He submerged just before he got to me then came up by me. I saw his whole body and big old fin. He then went back down, and we didn't see him again. We have been catching a lot, catch-and-release King salmon, while fishing for silvers. That was yesterday morning, 7am. One lone big male. -Bruce Bunich

17:45-19:44 - I took some photos from Tacoma of the Bigg's Orcas yesterday at Dune Peninsula and Titlow. I first spotted 3 orcas through my binoculars from Dune Peninsula around 5:45pm yesterday, they were mid channel in East Passage, still pretty far away. I then saw a pod of about 4-6 harbor porpoises around 6:07pm close to shore at Dune Peninsula and they continued around to the Tahlequah ferry lane. At 6:16pm they suddenly appeared very close to shore at the tip of Vashon headed towards the ferry terminal. At 6:19pm It looked like the ferry had to stop in order to let the orcas pass through. The orcas continued past and then hung out near the tip of point defiance for about 15 minutes, two orcas seemed to split off and continue towards the narrows bridge and one orca (possibly male) hung out a little longer near point defiance and I snapped my last photo of him at 6:40pm and then I left to go to Titlow to see if I could catch them there too. We waited a long time to see them at Titlow, they took their time passing through Narrows. I first spotted them from Titlow at 7:26pm and they were hugging the Gig Harbor shoreline. The two smaller orcas seemed to travel closer together with the male bringing up the rear. They would appear and then disappear for some time but eventually continued past Titlow and Fox Island and seemed like they were going up into Carr Inlet. I snapped my last photo at 7:44pm just before the last one disappeared into the distance. Attached are some of the better photos I took yesterday. Thanks! -Sally Milligan-Smith

12:00 - I can't describe it very well. I almost thought it was a porpoise at first, but it was definitely a small orca. Quite a substantial dorsal fin. I didn't get a good enough look at the saddle. TRANSIENT/BIGG'S ORCAS - Mon, Aug 23 - San Juan Islands (T2B, T59, T60s) - We had a picture-perfect afternoon on the water with six Bigg's killer whales, an interesting group made up of four of the T60s and the two adult females who are traveling with them, T2B and T59. -Orca Behavior Institute
*
17:15-18:43 - Center for Whale Research Encounter #56: "After leaving the T77s at Battleship (see Encounter 55), the team headed northeast towards a report of another group of Bigg's killer whales, reported as most of the T60s with T2B and T59. At 17:15, the team arrived on scene Cowlitz Bay, on the southwest side of Waldron Island. The whales were in a resting pattern, logging at the surface for some intervals and then taking long dives with unpredictable headings between surfacing sequences. After the first sequence, the whales split into two groups of two as the rounded Sandy Point and headed northeast. …" [See CWR Encounter #56 https://www.whaleresearch.com/2021-56 for full summary and more photos]

14:39-16:22 - Center for Whale Research Encounter #55: "… At 14:39, the team arrived on scene just off San Juan County Park, with a pair of whales that turned out to be T77C and T77D. While the team had photographed these whales recently, they were interested to see how T77C's wound had continued to heal, and to collect behavioral data using drone follows. The two whales made their way up the west side of the island, crossing the mouth of Mitchell Bay and heading into Open Bay. There, the team observed them initiate a prey pursuit dive, characterized by both whales turning belly-up before quickly diving. The whales next surfaced close to shore, apparently pursuing a seal, but they did not successfully make a kill. The whales hugged the shoreline tightly as they continued north along Henry Island, still in hunting mode. They tucked close to a pebble beach, and from the drone the team observed them again unsuccessfully pursue a harbor seal, which escaped into the shallows, followed immediately by another unsuccessful pursuit of a nearby river otter. …" [See CWR Encounter # 55 https://www.whaleresearch.com/2021-55 for full summary and photos]

*
14:05-14:10 - The pair resumed their travels and headed north past Landbank and out of sight. I suppose this hour of activity could have been hunting for fish or sibling rough-housing. Maybe a little of both. Maybe just happy to be orcas.
13:30-13:55 - Trending southward and moving farther from shore to 1/2 mile out, the pair continued their engagement with each other. Circling, bobbing up and down and almost giving chase.
13:14-13:30 - The 2 siblings began to circle each other, rising high out of the water and twisting as they re-entered showing their entire saddle path and sometime even a flash of their white belly. Lots of splashing and sideways, upside-down fluke lobs. Circling and circling, up and down in a tight circumference. The water was churning with their activity.
13:05 - 2 Bigg's Transients (T77C and T77D) northbound just south of Edwards Point (south of Landbank). These two snuck right past me. Surfacing to my right the pair stalled as they reached Edwards Point. -Michelline Halliday, SJI

When they arrived the whales had split into two groups, with T19B and T19 near the team and T18 and T19C much further east and out of sight. The team took some time to get the lay of the land, as the whales bounced between the several small islands in the area.
At 13:15, the eastern whales barreled west to meet up with the others. When the whales came together, the team took the opportunity to launch their research drone and begin some behavioral sampling. After joining up, the whales headed west across the channel, towards San Juan Island, and then headed north. As they made their way up the shoreline, the whale watch vessel Imagine reported that T60D and T60E were making their way south, close in to the San Juan shoreline, however the team never acquired these whales before the blew past the T18s and towards Friday Harbor." UNCONFIRMED DOLPHIN - Thu, Aug 19 - North Puget Sound - I saw something today that was a bit bigger than a porpoise but lighter in color and moving much more like a dolphin. It definitely was not a porpoise and it did not look like the bottlenose. I tried to get a video but didn't get my phone out in time. It was off Jefferson Head moving south. Any ideas? -Sara Frey
[Per David Anderson at Cascadia Research Collective, they have had a couple recent unconfirmed reports of what could be dolphins. "Common dolphins have come in from the ocean every year since 2010, usually in the summer, so I don't doubt that it is happening again. Three times, groups have stayed in the South Sound for a year or more, with the most notable being the group that was here from 2016 through last year. I really hope someone gets pictures so we can confirm it."]

UNIDENTIFIED BALEEN WHALES - Thu, Aug 12 - Central Puget Sound - 18:10 - Single whale off of Pier 59. Moved north a little and then headed south toward Coleman dock. Long downtimes. 6:10am (follow-up: I'm far from an expert, but appeared too large to be an orca, it had a dorsal that was more prominent than a humpback and yet less than even a female orca. Coloration was almost black, no barnacles or texture like a gray would have. If I had to make a guess, I'd say Minke? There were two WSF ferries and two Kitsap fast ferries present at the time…-Kev Harnax
*
~10:00 - Unfortunately I do not have a photo, but this morning at around 10am while fishing, I saw a humpback whale surface. It was heading south and I was about 150 yards off the oil dock at Point Wells between Edmonds and Richmond Beach. I am 99% sure it was a humpback, as I have seen many of them in my years in Maui. It had the dorsal fin of a humpback. I know grays are common in Puget Sound, and I have witnessed them many times. This was not a gray whale. Was very exciting. It was only about 30 feet away from us. -Ryan Murray

14:50 - I believe 5 (but could be more) orcas sighted in Hood Canal: Aug 10, 2021, 2:20 pm. Seen from … Canal Lane, just south of Duckabush estuary, Hood Canal, nearest town Brinnon, WA. They were dispersed but generally heading south. One lingered near the Duckabush estuary (where there is a seal colony). We did not see them returning. I believe at least 1 adult male and 1 smaller juvenile? I have no experience but there are Facebook comments that claim these are the T65[A] group. On the other hand, to me the dorsal fin looks curved. I don't see any open saddle patches but photos don't show this well for most individuals. This is unusual for us! But we have a lot of seals - 4 were huddled on our shore when they were present. -Reid Johnson, Brinnon
*
~14:20 - Our family was staying in a house this past week along the Hood Canal in the Canal Tracts neighborhood (Brinnon, WA) and we spotted orcas from the balcony on the other side of the fjord just southeast of us around 2:20pm on Tuesday, the 10th of August. Through our binoculars we saw a breach by an orca with a curved fin. It looked like there were younger orcas with it, possibly 3-4 total, but I cannot confirm that for sure. It was a pretty magical experience…I truly love seeing whales in the wild. -Carolyn ZM

MINKE WHALES - Tue, Aug 10 - South Puget Sound - ~10:00-12:00 - I know it sounds weird, but I think I saw a minke yesterday in Oakland Bay [Shelton]. Several surfaces but I wasn't quick enough with the camera to get a picture.
(follow-up: I'm not an expert at all, or even a novice but I'm guessing it was feeding. It was popping up north and south of me for about 2 hours. But I did get one great look at it as it surfaced and saw that it surfaced leading with its nose and barely made any waves. It was at least 20 feet long. It was about 10:00 to noon or so. I left around then so I don't know when it actually left. I've worked down there loading barges for about 10 years and this is a first for me. I've only seen a whale spouting once before and the orcas a couple of years ago. But they didn't get very close. -Bryan Walsworth
*
UNIDENTIFIED WHALES - Tue, Aug 10 - South Puget Sound - ~16:40 - We believe a pilot whale went by in Hammersley Inlet, heading out towards Arcadia Point at the 3.4 to 4 milepost marker on Arcadia. This was at approximately 4:40 pm.
(follow-up: All visible blows (we saw and heard at least 6), surfaced every 2 minutes, went long distance in between, shorter dorsal fin very dark, black. It's behavior and coloring were not that of a gray whale, Dall’s porpoise. It was the size of a Dall’s porpoise though. No pictures, these things happen fast, and it was traveling fast back out towards the mouth of Hammersley Inlet. -Brenda Rix

~19:30 - Last evening (8/9) at about 7:30 pm, I saw two orcas from the Hood Canal Bridge. I was driving east across the bridge and saw the dorsal fin of what I thought was a female. The fin went under the water briefly and then resurfaced briefly. I then saw the dorsal fin and back of what I thought was a juvenile. The whales were swimming west on the south side of the bridge. A passenger in the car saw the whales surface again when they were behind the car. She saw two that looked to be females and the juvenile - three whales in all. I have seen orcas a few times. Based on the size and shape of the dorsal fin I am sure these were orcas and not porpoises. -Randy Robinson, Seattle, WA

06:30-06:38 - This morning at 6:30am I heard whales headed up (S to N) Colvos Passage between Vashon Island and the Kitsap Peninsula, near the western (Kitsap) shore. I got my binoculars (I am on eastern shore) and watched them swim, surface, and blow in tandem. I don't know their sex. They didn't appear to be eating because of how fast they were traveling. A motor boat approached up the middle of the passage. I don't think the boat saw them, but the orcas disappeared (to me) as the boat got closer. I observed the pair ~6:30-6:38. Exciting! -Ann Vander Stoep

20:30 - They just headed out of Eld, heading north. Long dives right before this last surfacing series. Mid channel and angling toward Squaxin Island. All grouped together with all surfacing in unison and then a staggered one. Breaths are like geysers.

---- Yesterday we were motoring (at very safe distance) following three orcas from outside Oro Bay/Nisqually Reach west. They stalled outside Drayton Passage. We turned to our starboard, North into the mouth of the passage, when suddenly two additional Orcas surfaced to the right of our bow. So we had 3 to the port side and 2 to starboard. Rather quickly they merged right in front of us (off our port bow at that moment) and started a chase - based on my photographs. I caught several quick snaps of a grab and prey capture. -Christy Jobe
