----Follow-up by HG: Thank you for sending this amazing video. That's highly unusual behavior but the orca and boat appeared unharmed. It would help greatly to know where this took place, and what time of day? And any other descriptive information you can provide.
Reply: Around 12:30pm, between Camano Island's southern tip and Elger Bay on the east side of Saratoga Passage. After the encounter he followed us for about 20 minutes in deeper water. I stayed in the shallows, not wanting a second close encounter. He played with the boat for about 10 minutes, going under and rocking, then pushing and then spinning us before he swam off.
----Further follow-up by ALB:
1. What was location of T65A2 first time you saw him and what direction was he traveling? East side of Saratoga Passage between south Camano tip and Elger Bay. 200' of water.
2. Was 12:30 when you parted or first saw him? When we first saw him.
3. Had you spotted and followed him along at all prior to him approaching you? No
4. What direction was he heading in Saratoga last you saw? South right in front of us. We were heading north.

Dark blue/grey with dark colored markings along the body. Roughly 300' off shore. Last saw a whale this close to shore 3-4 years ago, on 6/23, so timing was pretty similar! -Chris Reanier

--- Surfing sunset whales - what a wonderful combination. After something akin to a leisurely stroll with mixed surface activity as they made their way north in Admiralty Inlet, the T34s and T37s picked up the pace surfing the wake of a freighter with considerable aplomb. Loud booms reverberated across the water as at least one whale repeatedly rode the ensuing waves, slapping the surface with enormous energy and power. What better way to wind down from the heat of the day as they passed Bush Point and Lagoon Point against the background of a deepening sunset glow. -Sandra Pollard

BIGG'S/TRANSIENT ORCAS - Thu, June 24 - San Juan Islands/Juan de Fuca (T49C) - 15:35-16:10 - Center for Whale Research Encounter #44 cont.: "… A little while earlier, T49C had been found at the bottom of Rosario Strait and he was now reported to have been heading west along the Lopez Island shoreline. At one point, all the whales in the group we were with made a turn to the east and it appeared like they must have heard T49C say something. We thought he might show up and join the group but they soon pointed back north toward Salmon Bank. We left the group around 1510 about one mile southwest of the Salmon Bank Buoy to go in search of T49C. We headed inshore toward Long Island before looking through the binocs and finding the boats who were with T49C a good two miles to the south of us. We took off in that direction and got to T49C around 1535 as he was charging west near MacArthur Bank. T49C continued fast traveling westerly on a line that would take him north of Hein Bank and in the direction of Constance Bank. T49C was cooperative and maintaining a straight line while he was up for his short dives. We ended the encounter at 1610 approximately a mile north of the north buoy at Hein Bank. …" [See CWR Encounter #44 for full summary and photos] https://www.whaleresearch.com/2021-44

Thu, June 24 - San Juan Islands/Juan de Fuca (T36 with T36Bs, T77C and T77D, T125A and T128) - 20:45 - At 21:34 John Miller, WSF Marine Ops, emailed report: YAKIMA Orca Sighting 6/24/2021. Log: 6/24, 2045hrs: Master reports that 60 minutes ago as they exited Thatcher Pass, they encountered 7 orca traveling north.
*
~17:30-18:40 - We encountered T125A, T128, T77C & T77D, and the T036's just north of Cattle Point Lighthouse, headed north, as they hugged the Lopez Island side; each matriline seemed to stick to their own group, though they stayed within half a mile of each other during the duration of our visit. The brothers traveled very close together, as did T77C & D; mostly long down times and average travel speed/behavior (6-10 minutes). T77C has an interesting white, slightly protruding/healing circular wound on their port side, just in front of the dorsal fin (see photo). Though photos were distant and the heat distorted many of them (may have been within 250 yards a couple times, but never any closer), I was able to ID T036 and each of the T036Bs. When we turned the corner, due east, and approached the Lopez Island Ferry Terminal, T125A and T128 headed due NW pointed toward Orcas Island, and the T77's and 36's continued due SE. We left them shortly after as we had to make our way back to Skyline, but those two groups seem to still be trending due SE, as if they might take Thatcher Pass. 16:00 - The big T superpod split up but rough water conditions out by Smith Island made it too sporty to keep track of them. The last sighting of some of them was just northwest of Smith Island. There is a good chance some of those orcas might head into the Sound tonight though. -Bart Rulon, Puget Sound Express

09:00 - Sighting (received 09:40): Good morning, I just encountered 6 orcas, heading southbound towards Anacortes, on the east side of Guemes Island, between Saddlebag and Huckleberry Islands, 9 am 6/18/21. I was headed northbound so we passed quickly and I did not get any pictures. There were two groups, two larger orcas in one, and about 150 yards away, a second group of 4, which included a smaller one (youth?). The largest one seemed more grey and black, not as white and black as some I've seen. -Happy summer, Keith Ronnholm

I did not see where they went after that. -Jeff Hill

June 17
BIGG'S TRANSIENT ORCAS - Thu, June 17 - Haro Strait (T18s) - 21:10-21:15 - Just at sunset with the waves picking up, 4 orcas made a dash northbound in the fading light 3/4 mile south of Landbank/Western Preserve. Using a tip from Alan Giles that the T018s were seen near Trial Island a couple hours earlier and some sketchy photos, I could make out the 2 nicks on T018's dorsal and the saddle patch of T019C. Really nice to see them fly over the chop with a faded sunset as a backdrop. -Michelline Halliday, SJI
*
Thu, June 17 - Haro Strait (T37A1, T37B1, T65A2+) - 12:58-15:00 - Center for Whale Research Encounter #42: "... The encounter started at 1258 maybe a quarter of a mile from the border off Hannah Heights. Most of the whales were in one large tight group heading slowly north. T65A2 and T37B1 were traveling and interacting with one another on the periphery of the larger group. They sometimes moved as far as a couple of hundred yards to the east of the big group but would repeatedly turn and approach the group again. Both T65A2 and T37A1 would briefly join with the others throughout the encounter. The whales continued slowly up Haro Strait and we ended the encounter at 1500 about a mile from the border off Sunset Point. After we got home, the whales moved closer inshore and were only about a half mile offshore as they very slowly passed the Center." [See CWR Encounter #42 for full summary and photos] https://www.whaleresearch.com/2021-42

11:37-12:00 - Far across from the Landbank/Western Preserve area along the Canada/US border 4, 5, 6, no, 8....many orca northbound. Hard to see. -Michelline Halliday, SJI

14:25-14:40 - The group appeared again at Edwards Point having changed direction up island. Southbound for a short while they began to mill and perform some serious splashy porpoising as the headed north again out of sight.
13:40-14:17 - Bigg's transients T46Bs northbound 1 mile south of Landbank/Western Preserve. A group of 3 closer in and 2 farther out, they came together about a 1/3 mile offshore continuing north and meeting up with 2 additional orcas, T46B1 and T46B1A. They seemed to be socializing or greeting one another just south of Edwards Point by milling and resting sideways, displaying a belly roll, a few fluke lobs and a breach. They continued north past Edwards Point and out of sight. IDs courtesy of Monika Weiland Shields. -Michelline Halliday, SJI
*
12:44 - Oh my goodness. The orcas just popped up. Just north of Eagle Point heading north. Close to shore. Looks like about five in the group closer to shore and I could see a couple further out that were coming in from Hein Bank. The ones closer to shore do not have any large males with them. I did see one large male that was traveling further out by Hein Bank. Possibly another large male too out there but pretty hard to see. Nobody is coming up on a regular basis. Long dives. The group closer to shore has a younger one with them that's quite playful. -Chris Wilson
["The 5 inshore would be the T46Bs who came down through Cattle Pass! No males and one youngster. The two whales that came in from Hein Bank and joined up with the 5 T46Bs were T46B1 and T46B1A." -Monika Wieland Shields, OBI]
*
11:05 - Exiting Cattle Pass
10:50 - Milling in Cattle Pass.

09:00 - T46Bs milling near Turn Island in San Juan Channel. Potentially more seen in San Juan Channel earlier this morning and lots of inbound Ts from the Strait of Juan de Fuca last night…
----The morning starting with the five T46Bs in San Juan Channel, and they were later joined in Haro Strait by the two T46B1s. T46B1B, better known as Tl'uk, the so-called "white whale" who has been in the media, has not been traveling with his family since the end of April. There was one poor-quality but convincing video of a white whale filmed near Nanoose, BC at the beginning of May, but no reports of him since then despite his family being seen regularly. Born at the end of 2018, he's likely too young to be dispersed from his family, so while it's especially difficult to say with Ts, the prognosis is not looking good. -Monika Wieland Shields, Orca Behavior Institute
*
08:15-09:00 - Center for Whale Research Encounter #41: "… The whales were still milling off the east side of Turn Island when we ended the encounter at 0900. … We met up with "Moja" off False Bay and Michael switched boats in order to fly the drone over the T46Bs for his behavior study and to help look for whale poop. Dave headed to the fuel dock and then went home. Later in the day, T46B1 and T46B1A showed up and joined the rest of the T46Bs who had headed south in SJ Channel and had exited Cattle Pass earlier. These seven whales headed up the west side of San Juan Island. Dave watched from shore as the whales chased some harbor porpoise off Edwards Point before continuing north past Landbank by mid-afternoon." BIGG'S TRANSIENT ORCAS - Tue, June 8 - San Juan Islands (T123s) - ~16:00-16:40 - We'd also caught wind that there were orcas making their way south down Orcas Island, so we went north to investigate. Family turned out to be the T123s. We found them off the east side of Orcas near Doe Bay and watched as they moved south, tucked VERY tightly to shore, aimed for Deer Point and Obstruction Island. We spent roughly 40 minutes with them (est. 16:00-16:40), never approaching closer than roughly 320-360 yards (we had a laser to measure our distance) before we had to head back to Cap Sante before the boat launch closed. During our encounter, the group was pretty tight knit and down times were between 2-4 minutes. Surfacing and traveling behavior only. When they rounded Deer Point and made a slight southwesterly turn toward Obstruction, they surfaced in a perfect line. -Amanda Colbert, Orca Network

Tue, June 8 - San Juan Islands (T46Bs) - … Our passengers were excited at the chance to see the orcas who were identified as the T46B's (minus the T46B1's). The orcas turned east in Presidents Channel moving away from us we kept up the pace with the hopes to catch up. We had wind up San Juan Channel, but once we reached Presidents Channel it was like glass. We were surrounded by gorgeous scenery in every direction. With the ebb current against them the orcas took their time moving up the channel. When we reached Pt. Hammond, we started seeing the fins and blows of the orcas. They zig zagged their way north passing a lone seal and many harbor porpoise on the way. They paralleled the US/Canada border but to our delight stayed on the US side. At Boiling Reef the currents were impressive. Porpoise were popping up all around us. The orcas did a 180 and turned back south treading water against the now strong flooding current. We paralleled them for a bit, but after one long down time they disappeared on us. Presumably they turned back north and zoomed away quickly on the flood. photos - "T46B's and Alden Pt. Lighthouse, Patos Island" - "T46B's swimming against strong currents near Boiling Reef" -Captains David and Barbara Howitt, All Aboard Sailing

SOUTHERN RESIDENT ORCAS - Mon, June 7 - Swiftsure Bank/Mouth of Strait of Juan de Fuca (L pod) - 11:36-13:10 - Center for Whale Research Encounter #34: "… …Mark spotted a lone killer whale dorsal fin on the horizon! As the animal surfaced again, it was clear that the bull was traveling on a north-north easterly line toward Mike 1. They began the encounter at 1136. The bull was apparently just beginning his breathing cycle and surfaced several more times, though he showed little saddle patch in the swell. No matter, the familiar towering fin of L85 is distinct enough! On his second cycle, the ID was confirmed, and Mark and Joe began scanning farther into the deep for more of the L12 and L22 sub-groups. … [See CWR Encounter #34 - https://www.whaleresearch.com/2021-34 - for full summary and more photos]

Mon, June 7 - E Strait of Juan de Fuca - We scanned McArthur Bank for activity and found whales on Salmon! Two minke whales were zigzagging across the bank, one appeared to be a juvenile while the size of the other suggested a probable female. Between sightings, we visited Whale Rocks where Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and a lone California sea lion were relaxing. These pinnipeds were also being watched by a mature bald eagle, go figure. The minkes on Salmon were showing off how they earned the nickname "Slinky Minke" so we continued south to Partridge. Here we found several more minkes, one which surprised those of us on the bow with an incredible close pass. While the bait was boiling, the whales didn't seem to be focused on the surface-active bait balls where hundreds of birds were circling. Instead, they meandered across the bank, keeping us on our toes. -Sam Murphy, Island Adventures Whale Watching (Anacortes)
*
MINKE WHALES - Mon, June 7 - E Strait of Juan de Fuca - … Cutting into the back eddy to Cattle Point Lighthouse before fighting the flood out to Salmon Bank. One mile south of the green can we met two minke whales. One of them was our familiar friend who has a nick on the leading edge of the dorsal fin. We've seen this minke for several years now and refer to it as "Minke Mouse". The other had a sharp pointy dorsal fin. We didn't observe any foraging behavior but while we silently drifted, they gave us some great close views. It was a phenomenal minke encounter. … -Captains David and Barbara Howitt, All Aboard Sailing

I'd like to report a sighting. From my house in the Possession Sound near Browns Bay, I saw not less than two Orcas. I contacted Puget Sound Express as I saw a whale watching boat nearby, and according to them it was T165 [was T65As]. I am quite sure I saw a second Orca, as the second whale that surfaced had a much smaller dorsal than the first. The whales appeared to be moving south. -Kashf Iqbal

16:05 - One male trailing behind, 1605. En route towards Edmonds.

~15:45-16:00 - We went on to find the T65As, T77 & T77E south of Possession Point, east channel north of Edmonds around 3:45-4pm until about 6. They were very spread out traveling and looking for meals. Finally at the very end of the tour they began to hunt. Lots of tail flapping. They took out a couple seals very quickly and then we watched them celebrate several times with many large breaches and spyhops! It was like a gift, as we had to leave to get back to PT... The best goodbyes we could have received from these beauties! -Jessica Richter

---- There and back...there and back... That's the story of the T65As over the last few days as they explore Puget Sound. Once again T65A2 was some distance from other family members as they headed south in Saratoga Passage before re-grouping north of Hat Island. After milling briefly, the orcas picked up the pace and maintained their southbound route between Hat and Whidbey toward the Clinton/Mukilteo ferry lanes and Possession Sound (images Sandra Pollard, zoomed/cropped). photo - "T65A2 rejoining other family members at 1:47 pm as they exit Saratoga Passage southbound." photos - "The long lens caught this reunion between T65A2 (b. 2004) and Mom T65A (b. 1986) during yesterday's encounter (see earlier post) when the whales regrouped north of Hat Island. T65A2 had been travelling separately from other family members in Saratoga Passage for some time, as he had done similarly in Port Susan two days earlier. It just shows that, although he may be almost grown up, he's not yet ready to leave home!" -Sandra Pollard

… We dodged our way through a maze of crab pots between Goat Island and Strawberry Point, then continued on towards East Point where we met up with the T65As! This note-worthy pod of Bigg's Killer Whales has been spending quite a bit of time in the Salish Sea of late. They looked to be busy finishing off a meal when we arrived. SR3 and collaborating researchers were on scene taking drone photos during the encounter; fun to watch research in action. Artemis and most of her kids continued south, while Calisto and babysitter Amira lagged behind. Calisto has been making a habit of this of late, trailing behind the pod after a kill while being babysat by one of her older brothers. …Island Adventures Whale Watching (Anacortes)

Follow-up at 20:01: A few times it laid on the surface for a few seconds (could see a good portion of its back), and a couple times it stuck the front of its head out for several seconds (I don't know if it was far enough out to be called spy hopping -- couldn't tell if its eyes were above water). The rest of the time it would take a couple breaths then disappear for quite a while; I wasn't timing the dives. I was watching for Orcas coming south from Edmonds at the same time. -Andrea Grad

Tue, June 1 - E Strait of Juan de Fuca - Minke mania today in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. … We scouted out the banks, and found minke whales at Eastern and Partridge.
