T137 Loon - T137D Wright & T137B Tempest -
I woke up yesterday to reports of orca at the mouth of Holmes Harbor. There was no ID, but the T137s (Loon, Jack, Wright and Tempest) a family I'm very familiar with were in the area the day before, so I headed down to Wonn road to take a peek. Within moments of arriving, I saw Jack's fin. Yep, they had stuck around. I was treated to about an hour of hunting with intermittent spells of breaching and other surface activity. Most of the time I was alone. The water was glass smooth, and the whales' exhalations were clear and loud. It was peaceful and serene. About the time they were exiting Holmes Harbor to begin their journey south, Rachel Haight joined the chase. She caught them a few times as they traveled towards Langley. Eventually, we met up at Sandy Point, a bluff with a road that allows us to see long distances in multiple directions. Rachel got them in view pretty quickly. They were still headed south, so we figured we would see them in about 30 minutes. Then, they stalled. UGH! Rachel had a pretty good idea of where they were. It was only a 10 minute drive, so off we went. Now, we arrived at the site where Rachel thought we might be able to see them. Oh see them we did, but before we saw them, we HEARD them. They were literally at our feet, and they were on a hunt. Now, we were both pretty darned excited. Rachel ran to get her camera, and I started shooting. We were close....I mean CLOSE, and that gets your adrenaline pumping. We had maybe 5 minutes with them before they drifted off into an area that was obscured by brambles, bushes and trees. We tried to catch them a little further down the road, but they must have kicked it into second gear. We did catch them again at Sandy Point before saying goodbye for the evening. The pictures are of this encounter. An encounter I mentioned yesterday when I was going through the pictures. At the time I was shooting, I was so excited, I really didn't see what was in my view finder. This happens to me a lot. I'm often surprised when I get home and pull up my pictures. This series shows a hunt. It shows the prey (a sweet harbor seal), and it shows the battle. There is no blood or gore, but the reality of the hunt is evident. The pictures make me emotional, but I hope that by sharing, you might see the incredible workings of nature as I do. I share the wonder, the cruelness, the beauty and the pain. -photos by Cindi Crowder Rausch, November 30, 2022

10:09 -
Cindi Rausch called to update us on the T137s. She is still viewing from Wonn Road access, but the pod has meandered east toward Baby Island, but are still in/at the mouth of Holmes Harbor. A lot of surface activity, Jack is breaching a lot. Can’t tell if they are yet committed to a direction, but general trend if any is northbound out of harbor, but might still be hunting, feeding.
*
10:10 -
I thought he had moved on when saw him surface again. Halfway between Greenbank and Baby Island from my perspective on the highway.
10:05 - I was passing Greenbank on the highway when I easily spotted Jack's dorsal, due east of Greenbank. I flipped around and pulled over to see him breach 3 times! -Rachel Haight, Orca Network

Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24): Would the Southern Residents stay around for Thanksgiving and enhance a special day? was the question on many people's minds. Sure enough there they were in all their glory exuding their uniquely magnificent presence as they milled, foraged, breached and porpoised their way along the Whidbey Island shoreline in a spine-chillingly spectacular procession. With calm conditions prevalent, 'booms' reverberated across the water from energetic breaches, along with the 'whoosh' of exhalations carrying on the still air. Every encounter is different and some more memorable than others - this one was exceptional. -photos by Sandy Pollard, November 24, 2022 -photos by RJ Snowberger, November 24, 2022

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS (fish-eating ecotype) - November 23: It's hard to believe that we've had ALL the Southern Residents in inland waters for 17 days and counting, something that has not happened in recent memory. They've been ranging throughout the entire Salish Sea from the southern reaches of Puget Sound all the way to Campbell River and everywhere in between. It's important to remember, in light of our shifting baselines, that this DID used to happen!

Abundant Fraser River spring and summer Chinook and Puget Sound fall chum runs used to regularly support the entire Southern Resident population in inland waters for weeks at a time in the summer and fall. Over the last decade, superpods have become so rare in the Salish Sea, we are now almost surprised when one occurs. The fact that all the whales have been able to stay for so long this month is a positive indicator that there are enough fish here to sustain them right now.

Per an article shared earlier this week by the Puget Sound Institute referencing WDFW numbers, abundant chum runs are certainly part of the reason we've had all the Js, Ks, and Ls here. After the worst chum run in 40 years in 2019 at just 164,000 fish, fall runs in Puget Sound have improved every year since then, and are coming in at an estimated 600,000-700,000 fish this year, double the number originally forecast.

With the whales also spending a lot of time in the Strait of Georgia, it's also a positive sign that that there are likely abundant winter Chinook this year. These fish, also called resident Chinook or blackmouth, don't go out to the open ocean but rather spend most or all of their saltwater life in inland waters. Scientists are still studying which fish do this and why, but one fisheries biologist I spoke to said the number of resident Chinook has remained relatively constant over the last 50 years, in contrast to the declining run numbers overall. While these fish are still declining in size (which means less bang for the whales' buck per fish they chase down), they're a big reason why we've had Southern Residents, particularly J-Pod, around a lot in the winter months, even in recent years. -Orca Behavior Institute

17:11 -
I posted on K pod thread as well but pods have merged and after some directional changes are all grouped together, tight. They were facing north barely moving when in same spot they next surfaced all facing south, it was beautifully surreal. They are facing southbound but are just drifting in one big logging cuddle under where the light meets the color, north of the ferry lanes mid channel. It’s one of the most beautiful sights I’ve seen with orcas.
16:20 - Southbound Js [approx. 47.513192, -122.432332],, Northbound Ks [approx.47.4330326, -122.403061]. Soon hello.
16:15 - Sublime heart happy moment in time watching J pod all grouped in resting line under this beautiful orange sky. Illuminated exhalations as they make their way slowly southbound towards north end Vashon. Not quite there yet but getting close. 11:50 - A humpback whale
was observed on the west side of Henderson Bay (Pierce County) closer to the shore of the Key Peninsula than the Gig Harbor Peninsula, as the water is deeper on the west side of the bay. The whale meandered north and south repeatedly for a couple hours. Many sea lions (which have been "barking" all night for two weeks now, and resting or feeding in groups of 10-20 for hours during the day) swam quickly to the eastern shallower shore when the whale appeared. It was a beautiful sunny day and the whale's appearance made it especially memorable. -photo by Cathryn Rice, November 20, 2022

UNIDENTIFIED BALEEN WHALES -
Sun, Nov 20 - Admiralty Inlet - 15:35. I think (but am not sure) that it is a humpback--but it could easily be a gray. About 3 miles south of Bush Point (so halfway into Mutiny Bay), close-ish to the Whidbey side. Going slowly south. About a minute or two between when it surfaces. -Mike Meyer

PORPOISES - Sun, Nov 20 - Saratoga Passage - While waiting for J pod to arrive we witnessed 150-200+ harbor porpoises (including dozens of calves) in Saratoga Passage spread across in all directions from East Point to Elger Bay. This was by far the largest number of harbor porpoise I have ever seen in Saratoga Pass and possibly ever. In years past I have seen many dozens in upper Admiralty off Bush Point and around Fort Casey, also off Meadow Point, Golden Gardens North Seattle, but honestly I don't think even close to the quantity seen this day in Saratoga. I was squealing, it was amazing and the calves were so adorable.  -Alisa Lemire Brooks, Orca Network -photo by Rachel Haight, November 20, 2022

Time: 11:17 AM
Species seen: Orcas; not 100% sure if the saddle patches were open or not. Pictures suggest they were, but they are distant, and I am inexperienced.
Number of animals seen: 3
Where seen: Heading South into Puget Sound, seen from Point No Point (rough coordinates: 47.904829, -122.448067), roughly in the middle of the channel at first, gradually moving SSE to the horizon from my perspective.
Direction of travel: Generally South; somewhat steadily and rapidly, only pausing/slowing their movement in one area for 5-10 minutes before moving farther South-Southeast.
Behaviors observed: Traveling
If orcas, any males?: Yes; at least one
Any unusual markings?: Not able to be determined
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your encounter?: I wasn't expecting to see them, that's for sure! This is my first ever encounter with orcas, so I have no prior experience with them (or with identifying individuals) whatsoever (aside from my hours of excited research last night when I got home). It was hard for me to tell how many there were, because I'm not sure how quickly they usually travel; I tried to track them, and it seemed rather sporadic in where they would surface, which suggested to me that there were more orcas present than I could see at once. I believe there were at least 3, but probably more. I was only able to document 2 surfacing together in one single photo, but clearly have pictures of 2 single/separate individuals before then. I'm not sure if it's possible to tell more pod members apart from the distant photos I have. I was sitting on driftwood below the trees on the southern end of Point No Point Park, birding (my primary purpose for being there; watching seabirds), when I saw the first huge black fin slowly appear and slowly disappear almost straight out in front of me, across from the Scatchet Head/Cultus Bay area, south of Maxwelton. I followed them at the water's horizon line until they disappeared due to distance, about 20 minutes total. I will send all the useful photos I took after submitting this form.

This afternoon we got to spend some time on the water with the T34s, T37, and T37Bs, and there was a new calf in the mix! It appeared to be mostly surfacing alongside 24 year-old female T37B Harald, and if confirmed this would be her third offspring. What was particularly amazing was that the whales were engaged in what turned out to be a successful sea lion hunt, and the young calf was right in the thick of it the whole time! We witnessed the end of the hunt and then the prey sharing afterwards, with lots of surface activity both from the whales and from the several hundred gulls were taking advantage of the scraps. Here is Jason's video of our encounter with the T34s and T37s from yesterday afternoon in Cattle Pass. As we got on scene, the whales were in the midst of what would become a successful Steller sea lion hunt (there's no blood or gore, but viewer be advised you can see the sea lion in a few scenes). The new calf, likely just a few weeks old, was right in the thick of things both during and after the hunt. Once the kill was made, the whales commenced prey sharing, both with each other and with the hundreds of gulls and even a bald eagle who also snatched an easy meal. There was a lot of surface activity from the whales with tail slaps and breaches. Make sure to turn on your volume if you enjoy the musical accompaniment! -Orca Behavior Institute -photo by Monika Wieland Shields, November 19, 2022 -video by Jason Shields, November 19, 2022

We have exciting news to share! The T37 pod has a brand-new calf! Apparently, the calf was first seen on November 12 in Trincomali Channel, BC, Canada by an Ocean Wise Marine Mammal Research team during a survey, but we had the good fortune of seeing the new calf in the USA during our trip on Saturday November 19 with Puget Sound Express. After first watching a minke whale and then a humpback whale early in our trip we found out that some Bigg’s killer whales were spotted near Whale Rocks and the new calf was with them. When we arrived the T34 and T37 pods were circling around a Steller sea lion they just captured, and gulls were flying overhead trying to pick up some leftover scraps. It wasn’t long before we saw the tiny little squirt, with orange eye patches, pop out of the water with the rest of the family. The new calf was surfacing remarkably close to T37B (Harald) during most of our time watching the feeding frenzy, indicating she would probably be the mom.  Of course, we will wait for the official word on that from researchers, but it sure looks like the ID number will be T37B3 for the new calf. The calf might only be days or weeks old because you could still see fetal folds on the dorsal fin of this very tiny baby. One of the most interesting parts of this experience was watching Harald interact with the calf. We saw Harald tail slap repeatedly especially when the calf surfaced right next to her. Sometimes the calf would pop up alone for a quick breath but most of the time it was glued to Harald’s side. We see the T34s and T37s in the Salish Sea very often, so it's exciting to think that we should have lots of opportunities to watch this little orca grow up in the coming years!   -Bart Rulon, Puget Sound Express -photos by Bart Rulon, November 19, 2022

16:14 -
Milling in this area now [approx. 47.372338, -122.628539]. It was fun to hear the reactions of people around me. Such a great afternoon for whale watching!
15:54 - Directly south of the spit. He has since moved toward the Purdy Bridge still angling southeast. -Wendy Otto Ferrell
*
15:55 -
Seems to be coming in closer to Purdy Sand Spit now (north) and lunge feeding. aking deeper dives, but still very active here.
15:24 - More spouts, flipper action, and even a breach visible from Purdy. Still very much in the distance, south of Purdy Spit. Seems to be milling and not going anywhere fast.
15:07 - Spouts visible again from Purdy! Center of channel, south of Purdy. Near-ish Raft Island. Can't tell a direction but lots of activity with sea lions. -photos by Carly Vester, November 14, 2022

14:18 -
He’s moving southwest. Away from the fish and activity. In the middle of the bay about 20 houses down from the boat launch. -Jennifer Burton Stolz
*
13:52 -
Appears to be mostly milling in that area. Lots of porpoises as well. -Valerie Aspée*
*
14:09 -
He’s at the spit now directly across from it. Sea lions and birds galore.  -Amanda Lloyd*
*
14:00 -
He’s moving along the shore, away from the spit, with what I’m assuming is a big school of fish. Lots of seals and sea lions. Have been watching him for a couple of hours moving back and forth between spit and Minter Creek area.
13:47 - Humpback visible from Purdy spit. Between shore and barge east side. -Jennifer Burton Stolz
*
[Video taken] This morning (in Henderson Bay). -Jane Durnbaugh Thompson
*
10:30 - Malachite

*
09:00 -
Molly McCutcheon called to report seeing a humpback whale (presumably Malachite) earlier this morning in Henderson Bay closer to Purdy Bridge (between bridge and creek). Whale flapped it’s fluke 4 times [tail lob]. Whale has been milling back and forth feeding. Neighbor saw him earlier by Deadman and was wondering if minke in the mix too. Tons of seals and sea lions.

HUMPBACK WHALES - Sun, Nov 13 - Puget Sound - 10:12 - In Possession Triangle. Line of sight is Stamm to the point at Double Bluff. Depth looked like in between Eglon and Possession Point. Setting up my tripod to try to get a fluke. -Sara Montour Lewis, Our Wild Puget Sound

08:32 -
Donna VanRenselaar called to report spotting a baleen whale in North Puget Sound between Kingston, Edmonds and South Whidbey. From Apple Tree Point looking north toward Cultus Bay she saw the blow and little bit of dorsal ridge of who she is assuming humpback, but it was a quick glance so that's unconfirmed at this time. Whale was in the southbound shipping lanes, well north of the Edmonds/Kingston ferry traffic lanes.

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS (fish-eating ecotype) - Sat, Nov 12 - Haro Strait (J, K, & L Pod) - On November 6, all 73 Southern Residents made their way into inland waters, and they've been traversing the Salish Sea from south to north since then. On Saturday November 12, we were lucky enough to spend a few hours with them as they went north from the San Juan Islands towards the Strait of Georgia. It's been years since we've had a superpod encounter like this. There have been superpods - likely many of them out west or on the outer coast - but they've become a rarity in the Salish Sea. And in recent years when they have happened, we've either missed them due to their location or they've been cut short for us due to lack of daylight or even wildfire smoke! Thanks to Jason, we can all enjoy these video highlights from our memorable encounter again and again. We started out seeing spread out members of all three pods, and the grand finale was seeing all 32 members of L-Pod form up and travel together in one tight group. Make sure to watch in 4K, and if you haven't already, please subscribe to our YouTube channel! For anyone that's curious, Jason is able to capture these stunning shots with an effective focal range of up to 780mm, which is a combination of zoom lens, camera crop factor, and physical and digital teleconverters. Some scenes have been further cropped in post-processing. When on the water, we were mostly about 1/4 mile (400+ yards away), and not closer than 300 yards, with the exception of the male in the opening scene who surprised us! (L108 Coho). -Orca Behavior Institute -video by Jason Shields, November 12, 2022

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS (fish-eating ecotype) - Fri, Nov 11 - Haro Strait (J, K, and L Pod)
14:00 -
Most or all of them have passed East Point heading into the Strait of Georgia and observers further north think they saw members of K-Pod as well, so they may all still be together!
12:35 - Comment on OBI's post has breaching whales off Pender heading up Boundary - others off Saturna aiming for East Point.
12:00 - Piecing together various reports it sounds likely that some are going north up Swanson and some are heading up Boundary.
10:30 - Reportedly approaching Turn Point, spread, still northbound.
08:19 - 30+ SRKW northbound off County Park. All three L-Pod sub-groups represented in my photos this morning (L4s, L12s, L54s) plus at least J47, so there were some Js in the mix as well as all of L-Pod. Call of the wild! With reports the humpback was still at Purdy Spit, I had to go back. We were rewarded with several long-distance spy-hops/breaches. And just as we were going to call it a day, the sunset cracked through and lit up one last shot. What a day.

3 whales still well south of boat ramp. Slightly to Whidbey side of mid channel. Visibility deteriorating rapidly.
16:02 - At least two whales now. Maybe a bit closer to Whidbey side says my better half. Foraging.
16.00 - Seeing dorsal fin from Possession boat ramp heading north, appears closer to Mukilteo side. Ferries beware! -Sandy Pollard
*
16:30 -
A friend from Whidbey just texted and says they have eyes on them in Cultus Bay. They said they saw at least 20 from Cultus and that they were grouped in groups of 2-3. Then went to Possession Beach and saw them pass there.
15:00 - A couple have passed the Maxwelton Point (seen from Ocean Ave) and are heading towards Cultus Bay. Quite a few others are heading that way, as well. -Our Wild Puget Sound

14:53 -
Volunteer Sara Frey called to update on those she is seeing. Most have been well offshore, but now she has a group right off Apple Tree Point, Kingston (north of ferry terminal) which includes big male who is foraging. She did get saddle image of him and thinks a female she’ll share later. They are about 100 yards offshore. Sara sees more out in channel, she watched a lot of big males go by earlier. Seeing some still south of ferry traffic lanes, and now while on the phone another big male heading her way. Also another ~ 10 just crossing the ferry lanes, maybe trending northbound, lots of foraging. The Superior Mirage has been bad all day making it difficult, all could see was males floating for a while. Hard to say where the leaders are.

What a glorious day. Received the message that the SRKWs were off of Bainbridge and I geared up and ran out the door. Sitting atop my favorite spot to watch for them, I was bundled up in my heavy coat, hood up, and set up the scope. Instantly, I saw the Kingston Fast Ferry going VERY slowly. As I looked through the scope, I could see fin after fin after fin. It was too cloudy to see blows at that time. This was the leading group. They were bunched together and traveling north. Just south of Shilshole. Then, south, there was another group. Same thing, mostly tightly grouped and traveling north. Watch both groups for a bit. Getting ready to leave, and then I noticed another boat, a research boat. Yet another huge pod of orcas. Here is my view, not great conditions, but a glorious sight from my perspective. I don't have a fancy camera with which to share better photos. I see many other posts here with better quality photos and video. But I can guarantee that the eyes on the other end of this scope were streaming tears of joy to see these amazing creatures travel together. To do what they do and not see any boats harassing them was a treat. I have never seen so many whales all in one day from one spot. Thank you Orca Network for all you do! -Kimberly Sylvester -video by Kimberly Sylvester, November 7, 2022

From Magnolia Discovery Park shore today. I'm hoping they were eating a lot. I wish them all full bellies and space from boats to allow them to successfully echolocate their food. And to not have the boats scare away their prey. It's pretty cool from having spent so much time working directly with rescue dolphins to seeing orcas wild from the shore. -photos by Jennifer Godfrey, November 7, 2022

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS (fish-eating ecotype) - Sun, Nov 6 - E Juan de Fuca (J, K, L Pods)
Excerpt from the Center for Whale Research Encounter #77: “They arrived on the scene with the lead group slightly east of Staines Point at 1332. The whales were tight together and heading east, while more fins could be seen behind and to the southwest. The first whale identified was J27, who was traveling closely with J31, J56, and J53. Moments later, the J14s, J17s, and J22s surfaced in tandem after a long dive, while the J16s surfaced parallel but further to the north…” Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #77

16:05,
Viewing from 1 mile south of Landbank's Westside Preserve I could see a line of orca fins to my south. The Southern Residents were inbound just north of Pile Point, traveling slowly southeast about 1.5 miles from shore. Surfacing often they were in small groups, the groups close together in a line. At 16:20 they adjusted their direction heading south away from shore in the general direction of Hein Bank. By enlarging the photos I was able to get a fairly accurate count of 15 and probably a few more. Monika Wieland Shields reported seeing "easily 20 - 30 orcas off South Beach" miles from shore at 15:50. These two sightings could represent 45 orcas. The orcas were monitored by a small CWR research vessel. -Michelline Halliday, SJI -photo by Michelline Halliday, November 6, 2022

[I] was walking in Sharpe Park in Anacortes and got close to cliff overlooking the sound, when I heard them first surfacing and blowing. I had to look through the trees but sure enough I saw them. There could have been 4-6. They were surfacing and following the shoreline for a minute or two and then must have dove because it went silent. -photo by Charlene Hall, November 1, 2022

My sister and I were at Holmes Harbor and several whales were out there. Seemed to be feeding on something. Then we watched several whales in lines that eventually swam out the inlet. It was amazing. We did see what to me, appeared to be a semi young orca that had breached closer to East Harbor Road. Some had large black dorsal fins and some smaller. -Toni Cooper
