BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) - Sun, Oct 30 - South Puget Sound (T36 & T36Bs) - “Believe it or not, I've never seen whales on my actual birthday. Having ended up with plans to be in the Seattle area over a long weekend, I kept my birthday Sunday clear with the intent of keeping the day free to try and see whales somewhere in Puget Sound if there were any around. The high winds and steady rain in the forecast were not looking promising, and in the morning we learned J-Pod was somewhere out of sight in the waves of the "Possession Triangle" (and they eventually left Puget Sound). Then a report came in of orcas southbound in Dana Passage near Olympia (whale icon on the map below). With no other plans, we decided to go for it, starting from Edmonds (a good 80 miles away!) I figured we would get an update from someone before we got there, but as we got closer, there were no follow up reports. We were on our own to guess which of the many inlets in the tangled waterways of southern Puget Sound they might end up in. We stopped in one spot and scanned for a bit. Nothing. Hmmm. Don't despair. What's the formula? Determination + Whale Math + Luck = Whale Magic. Seeing orcas in Hammersley Inlet has been one of my bucket list locations, a waterway so narrow it looks more like a small river rather than anything connected directly to the ocean. My gut said head to the one public access spot there (marked with the heart on the map below). It was raining. Jason said take the camera just in case. We walked down to the beach. We looked left. Nothing. We looked right. We both saw the blow at the same time. "You've got to be f-ing kidding me!" were the first words out of my mouth. It was 3.5 hours after the original and only report, and we arrived at the beach 2 minutes before they did. There's nothing quite like that high of rolling the dice and winning. It's exhilarating to take what little you know about whales, throw a dart at a map, and end up in the right place at the right time. Thank you, T36 and the T36Bs, for making this a birthday to remember.” -Monika Wieland Shields, Orca Behavior Institute -photo by Monika Wieland Shields, October 30, 2022

It's not often the opportunity arises to spend the whole day watching J pod from Whidbey Island in clear, calm conditions, but today presented whale watchers with that most welcome gift as a dignified procession of whales passed shoreline viewpoints. Following yesterday's blustery conditions in Puget Sound making sightings a challenge, this was a real bonus. Starting at Possession Beach Park, members of J pod continued steadily north past Brighton Beach and Sandy Point, culminating their known travel that evening beyond Hidden Beach along with the setting sun -photos by Sandy Pollard, October 28, 2022 -photos by RJ Snowberger, October 28, 2022

BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) - Sat, Oct 22 - (T123s and T252s) - Excerpt from the Center for Whale Research Encounter #75: “Once he was able to get abeam of them on the following dive cycle, he realized that they were the T123s, also a family of four with a bull, so understandably an honest mistake in their identity.
The T123s held their westward track for the next hour doing between 8 and 9 knots with T123A in the lead a quarter mile to the northwest of his mom and younger brothers. Mike 1 ended the encounter at 1154 south of Sheringham Point and returned to Victoria harbour…...Mark later heard that the T252s were picked up near the Papa Alpha buoy (~ 5 nm northwest of Port Angeles/~ 5 nm south of Race Rocks) eastbound by one of the whale watch boats.
When he downloaded his photos that evening, he discovered that the first whales he got distant shots of were, in fact, the T252s! The T123s and the T252s had indeed crossed paths once again.” Read more at Center for Whale Research Encounter #75

GRAY WHALES - Fri, Oct 21 - Central Puget Sound - 16:23 - JD and Traci Klein observed a single (likely gray) whale today southbound in the southern end of Agate Pass, closer to the Bainbridge Island side. They shared these two videos and were hoping other experts could chime in with ID opinions, or other baleen whales that have been sighted in that area in recent weeks. They witnessed ~10 surfacings, they saw a fluke only twice and not very high out of the water. They think some blows were heart-shaped and that was a notch in the tail. Per, Alisa Lemire Brooks: “Seems to be two straggler gray whales, one keeping to Southern Puget Sound and one keeping to Central Sound who keeps showing up in this corridor between South Bainbridge, Rich Pass, Bremerton and up Port Orchard Pass. Unfortunately so far no photos/video to help confirm ID. Was reported earlier on Thursday moving in different directions morning thru afternoon in Rich Passage, glad to see it moved up Port Orchard pass away from the ferry and other larger vessel traffic lanes.” -Scott Veirs

BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) - Thu, Oct 20 - Trial Islands (T123s) - Excerpt from the Center for Whale Research Encounter #74: “At about 1155, Dave was cruising along when he saw a male killer whale dorsal fin at about one o’clock off the boat’s bow. The male turned out to be T123A and the rest of the T123s and they were a couple miles south of the US/Canadian border somewhere south of the Trial Island area. The T123s were heading slowly northeast in less than a tight group with just a little bit of milling...” Read more at Center for Whale Research Encounter #74

HUMPBACK WHALES - Thu, Oct 20 - Central Puget Sound (Malachite) - 17:00 - Owens Beach, cruising the same area what we call the Dalco/Owens triangle. -photo by Cherie StOurs, October 20, 2022
*
17:00 - We were on Owen Beach were watching Malachite going back and forth as usual when something unusual happened out in the water! Lots of splashing around, definitely seemed to be something else large out there with the humpback- to be perfectly honest, from where we were my initial reaction was it looked like when orcas are on a kill, but I hadn’t seen any indication that any orcas were there at that time. Could it have been another humpback or maybe a porpoise had run into him? It seemed too big for a porpoise or seal though. After it ended, the humpback (presuming still Malachite) just went back to his normal routine passing back and forth along Vashon. -photos by Jennifer Swenson, October 20, 2022
*
16:30 - Thanks to Robyn Riley for her report of a humpback milling around Dalco/Colvos, just spyhopped off west end of Vashon. (PSWS)
*
GRAY WHALES - Thu, Oct 20 - Central Puget Sound - 14:30 - Sue Larkin relayed a report by Ignacio Cabezudo who reported: “Huge gray whale just went through Rich Passage!”
*
12:57 - I just saw a solitary whale in Rich Passage that appears to be a gray, but it is very foggy/smoky over the water and hard to see. Definitely not an orca, small dorsal, could be humpback, I suppose, but moving more like a gray. Staying near the surface, I hope it is ok. Pretty late in the season for grays?
*
09:36 - There is currently a gray whale west of Rich Passage. -Jennifer White

They were viewed from the Shine Tidelands State park area. My photos will confirm there were at least 4 individuals. One had a very large dorsal fin and there was at least one juvenile. They seemed to be feeding at one point based on their behavior. -photos by Sean Miller, October 19, 2022
*
17:30 - Could be this group that I saw while driving across the Hood Canal Bridge! Couldn’t get photos while I was behind the wheel but it was definitely T’s, and I saw a male and a female but couldn’t say if there were others. I saw the male and female surface a couple times, switching directions. They were just north of the bridge, closer to the Jefferson county side. -Amy K. Fowler

Thank you everyone for updates on them today! It was my first time seeing them and I cried. Orcas have always been my favorite animal, and my year I lived in Seattle I wasn’t able to see them once. With J pod tantalizingly close to the south end of Whidbey Island on Saturday - but not quite close enough - their much anticipated arrival in Admiralty Inlet today, joyfully breaching and cart-wheeling while foraging their way north in smoky Puget Sound, was yet another fine example of their will to survive even more challenges in a fast-changing world. Considering the enrichment their vibrant presence provides, we owe it to them to do all we can to help protect the environment we share and the air we breathe. -photos by Sandy Pollard, October 16, 2022 -photos by RJ Snowberger, October 16, 2022

Another very special day viewing dear J pod from shore on Whidbey Island! First caught a glimpse of them as they zoomed by Bush Point and Lagoon Point, with a bit of lunge feeding, to the delight of a large group of their human friends, though it was very hazy due to smoke. We all met up again at Ft. Casey as the sun was turning the water salmon pink. J pod had grouped up and passed us close enough to see the big beautiful dorsals, sweet baby faces, and even hear them! So amazing to see them together ! Wonderful encounter with J pod and so good to share with so many dedicated orca lovers! -photos by Bonnie Gretz, October 16, 2022

Follow up: We saw them right around 9:15am. There was about 15/20 of them. They were kind of spread out and then grouped back together as they got towards Whidbey. We didn’t see if they went west out to the straight or if they hugged the Whidbey coast line and went towards Everett/Camano.” -Our Wild Puget Sound
*
10:00 - Scanned for 30ish min from Sunset Ave in Edmonds. Couldn’t fully confirm, but it seemed like they were possibly by the Kingston ferry terminal based on the adjusted ferry routes/speeds and other boat traffic. If orcas, any males?: UNKNOWN
Any unusual markings?: UNKNOWN
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your encounter?: CONCERNING THE NUMBER OF ORCAS IN THE POD, I AM UNSURE AS THEY WERE QUITE SPREAD APART, 3 SURFACED AT THE SAME MOMENT, AND ANOTHER 2 SURFACED ONLY A FEW SECONDS LATER ABOUT 50 YARDS FROM EITHER SIDE OF THE GROUP OF 3. I WOULD GUESS THE GROUP WAS SPREAD OUT AT LEAST A FOOTBALL FIELD WIDE FROM ONE ANOTHER AND ABOUT A FOOTBALL FIELD FROM N TO S. THE CLOSEST ONE I SAW TO THE FERRY WAS APPROXIMATELY 50 YARDS AWAY. THEY WERE DEFINITELY MOVING NORTH. MY ESTIMATION OF THE NUMBER IS VERY CONSERVATIVE. THEY SEEMED TO BE ALL OVER THE PLACE TO MY UNTRAINED EYE I WANT TO SAY THERE WERE AT LEAST 15.

So now at least 4 orcas between her location at Manitou, Bainbridge Island and Southside of Discovery Park, Seattle. All heading northbound Seattle side. Super smokey. Kim is relocating to the north to continue to scout.

COASTAL KILLER WHALES - Sat, Oct 15 - CA Coast - 12:20 - 5 orcas were seen about 1 mile off the Point Arena Lighthouse Peninsula. When first seen they appeared to be logging, all five bobbing up and down in the same spot. Very little of their bodies were showing, including the one large male. Just the tips of all dorsals were visible. We were using binoculars to determine what they were. On one rise, we got a quick glimpse of a bit of the saddle of the male. After 4-5 minutes the group moved off to the WNW, maintaining the same very low profile. No photos were possible. -Scott Mercer

If orcas, any males?:
Any unusual markings?:
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your encounter?: I was anchored off the west shore of Blake Island, near the south end, and watched at least 2 whales, based on separate simultaneous blows, across the water near the Key Peninsula (aka Kitsap peninsula), well north of the Southworth ferry dock. Saw some surface lounging, mostly long dives in a broad area along the far shoreline; one tail raised briefly before a long dive confirmed they were humpbacks. Heard spouting closer to Blake Island after dark. The whales stayed in the area from dusk until at least midnight. Lots of small to very small fish at surface and jumping out of the water from mid-afternoon into the night. Very little bioluminescence near my boat.

HUMPBACK WHALES - Wed, Oct 12 - San Juans (BCZ0492) - 10-12-22 Humpback Sighting, Haro Strait, SJI - 09:35, Viewing from 1 mile south of Landbank's Westside Preserve. I heard a humpback blow twice before I located the individual about 1/2 mile offshore. The humpback was facing down island/south but the next time they surfaced they were facing up island/north so I can't really say which direction they came from. They were surfacing often in the same location, changed direction to the south/down island again, then a big dive showing the fluke. That was the last time I saw the humpback so I can't really say which direction they were headed either. Nice to see them though! -Michelline Halliday, SJI - BCZ0492 Meqe’ ID by Alisa Lemire Brooks, Orca Network -photos by Michelline Halliday, October 12, 2022

Species seen: Baleen whale? I will send an image. The behavior seemed more consistent with baleen whale than orca or dolphin, and the fin is small.
Number of animals seen: 1
Where seen: Seen from Bridges viewpoint in Point Defiance Park; they were in direction of the bridge. Close in. Approx coordinates believed to be 47.29935, -122.54122
Direction of travel : N, they were visible from this viewpoint for at least 1/2 hour
Behaviors observed: blowing. If what I observed was a single individual it blew 3 times while heading north. There was the sound of several more blows which others saw but I did not.
If orcas, any males?:
Any unusual markings?:
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your encounter?: At least 3 people saw them so you may get several reports. Although I personally saw only one individual, I believe multiple were present because I saw my individual heading north and then very quickly heard spouting and saw ripples further to the south. I will send photos but I did not have a long telephoto. I hope they will at least be sufficient to identify species.
Photos available?: Yes, I will email the photos to sightings@orcanetwork.org -photo by Steph Grush, October 11, 2022

BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) - Sun, Oct 9 - Strait of Juan de Fuca (T69s) - Excerpt from the Center for Whale Research Encounter #71: “At ~ 1215 Mark heard over the VHF radio that his colleague Paul from Sooke Explorations had come across the T069's east bound a little south of Sheringham Point. As Mike 1 neared their location the radio chatter indicated that all the boats had to leave due to time restraints so Mark offered to stop in for a quick encounter and hold onto the T069 group until the next commercial boat arrived. At 1240 he had his first look at them tightly grouped up doing fairly long dives of 5 - 6 minutes. They appeared to be almost in a partial resting pattern but were making 5 knots in a SE direction…” Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #71

I have seen some horrific hunts in the last few years as orcas go about feeding their families. There was one that left me questioning it all and wondering if orcas are monsters. They’re huge and prey like a harbor seal is so small in comparison. Not the minke whale though. At 27 feet long and up to 20,000 pounds, they’re as big as any male orca. Their defense is only speed, no teeth, no claws, just speed. The T065As and T099s (minus A2 & A5) surrounded this minke and took her down by an ambush with nine individuals as they closed in and worked her over like a gang would it’s victim. They do this as they have evolved to do it over millions of years. They don’t have hands or claws, so they lie in wait and overwhelm their prey with body blows, raking them with their teeth and grabbing on to weigh them down and eventually drown them. Watching this happen to a whale, especially one we’ve seen over the course of many years isn’t easy. It’s exhilarating, horrific and spellbinding in a single event. If I’m going to be out there then I have to be on team science and document it to the best of my ability. Goodbye Zeke, it was an honor to have seen you so many times over the past few years. Zeke was first recorded in 1982 and believed to be at least 40 years old so may have been on her senior stage of life. - April Ryan, Maya's Legacy Whale Watching -photos by April Ryan, October 7, 2022

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS (fish-eating ecotype) - Thu, Oct 6 - Haro Strait (J pod) - 10-06-22 J-Pod, Haro Strait SJI
08:20 - 09:45, Viewing from 1 mile south of Landbank's Westside Preserve, at first hearing blows to the south with leaders appearing at 08:30. I had a remarkable view of J19 Shachi fishing close to her granddaughter J58 Crescent. Round and round the two of them spun in a tight circle. A fish jumped out, J19 lunged at it and submerged. Seagulls appeared picking for scraps as J19 headed north with J58 in tow. Incredible to witness this matriarch teaching her granddaughter to hunt. I didn't see all of J-Pod, some stayed to the south. The group turn south/down island in the Landbank area at 09:45.
11:00 - 13:00, Sighted off Eagle Point, J-Pod spread out foraging over a large area. This activity continued with J-Pod traveling north and south between general area near Eagle Cove and general area near Point Edwards (just south of Landbank). At approximately 12:30 the entire group came together, quickly heading north to Henry Island.
15:55 - 16:50, Viewing from Landbank's Westside Preserve, J-pod heading down island / south from Lime Kiln. While passing Lime Kiln I saw surface activity in the distance, breaches, fluke lobs and porpoising.
16:15, J-Pod approaching Landbank, spread out, 300 yards to 1/3 mile from shore. Most everyone was close enough to ID and it was wonderful to see so many saddle patches bright in the sun. There were 3-4 tight groups with one group of 4 males traveling together; J26 Mike, J27 Blackberry, J38 Cookie and J47 Notch to the side. J26, J27 and J38 came in to skirt the rocks between kelp and shore. It was magnificent. I observed J56 Tofino close in and her fin is growing so tall!
17:05 -17:20, I moved down island, viewing from 1.2 miles south of Landbank, J-Pod continued to travel to the south, spread out with a few groups of 2-3 individuals. They were moving farther from shore as they traveled down island/ south.
17:59 - 18:05, I moved up island to watch the trailing orcas, viewing from 1 mile south of Landbank. J26 Mike was slowly milling in the sunset about 1/3 - 1/2 mile from shore. Photographed from shore. -Michelline Halliday, SJI - Likely J56 Tofino - J26 Mike - J26 Mike - J27 Blackberry -photos and IDs by Michelline Halliday, October 6, 2022

19:08 - Heartfelt thanks to the sailboat for blowing their horn at an incoming fishing boat who did slow off Meadow Point. Was wonderful call response. There are at least 6 orcas close to the point foraging while trending northbound with others in sight at least to mid channel and west of. Believe these are all the trailers. A J38 Cookie like fin is in the close group as is two little ones spy hopping and tail lobbing and rolling around. Can hear the pods' percussion and exhalations.
18:55 - For certain residents have come into Puget Sound. I’ve seen at least 18-20 and they’re still streaming by all the way across the Sound. Some cut in close off Meadow Point few minutes ago. So happy. Hello orcas.
18:45 - I just think these must be residents. There are orcas spread out all directions in singles and pairs. Lead whales as far as I can tell are approaching out from Meadow Point with others off Shilshole and more coming. All northbound with some foraging. Seeing males on west and trailing. More and more convinced.
18:25 - Mid channel out from south end Shilshole seeing at least 5-6 females/juveniles including 1-2 little ones. Lead whales moving quickly. With few trailers close behind making directional changes. No males in this group I am watching. At appx 5pm on 10/04/22, we caught a conversation on vhf 13 between the ferries regarding northbound orca just off Tyee Shoal at the entrance to Eagle Harbor, Bainbridge Island. We were departing the harbor for an evening sail and motored out to see what we could. Just about 5:20pm north of Yeomalt Point we spotted 3 or 4 about middle sound, and then stretching in the distance almost all the way to West point there seem to be 10 or thereabouts. We only saw the one male, ID’d by you all as J-27, a number of adult females and what seemed to be two babies that we could see. The littles were quite playful, breaching and splashing, spy-hopping and tail slapping. They didn't appear to be feeding but meandering north. Though I'm not sure I know what the Southern Residents feeding pattern looks like. They were moving at about 3 knots which is quite slow. They were in parallel with us quite far away for about 40min and then J-27 and an adult female to a sharp turn towards us with some power and speed, so we shut down our engine and just watched. They came right over to use and did some circles off our stern before making a close flyby and the pod picked up their pace northbound and we headed south for home. Incredible encounter and so thrilled that you all shared with us that it was J-Pod. Truly moving. -Benjamin Doerr - J27 Blackberry -screen grab from video by Benjamin Doerr, October 4, 2022

Excerpt from Center for Whale Research Encounter #69: “After hearing reports of the T109As heading east over Constance Bank, the team were on standby to see if their recent travel companions – the T252s – would also be located. Sure enough, at 1154, the team received word that T251 had been located nearby so Mark and Brendon quickly made their way down to Mike 1 and departed the harbour at 1230. The encounter began at 1257 with the T252s meandering west at 6 knots. Initially, the group was in a tight resting formation but the bull, T251, seemed restless and would periodically break rank and charge ahead. “ Read more here at Center for Whale Research Encounter #69
