October 31
5:00 p.m. - Just saw them from Alki trending south...3 for sure, but only saw them come up twice. Too far out to identify or get pictures. -Jill Hadji

4:00 - 4:10 p.m. - north/central Puget Sound - watched what is turning out to be a 4th whale (to Stu's 3) After last report humpback flipped and is now traveling south, shallow surfaces approx. every minute in southerly direction. Same general area as earlier post.
3:50 and 3:55 - from Stamm Overlook Park, north Edmonds saw blows of at least one whale 1.5- 2 miles south of Possession Point. Northerly travel. -Alisa Lemire Brooks, Orca Network

4:01 p.m. - north/central Puget Sound - group of three humpbacks now on north end of Sandy Lane - Kitsap side .
3:35 p.m. - repeated tail slaps by one of the three!
3:08 p.m. - humpbacks are back and forth'ing on the Kitsap side near Rose point and Elgon. As seen due west from north Edmonds. *when I first saw these I thought it was an orca pod due to number of blows! But then I saw their back and knew it was humpbacks. I think it might be three - maybe a mom and calf + 1 - they are staying close together. Last dive was southerly most close to what I believe is near Rose point
2:42 p.m. - two, maybe three humpbacks about 1.5 miles south of Point No Point heading northerly near shipping lanes Kitsap side. Whales relatively close together making seeing the blows easier.. Especially given this gusty day! -Stu Davidson

12:30 p.m. - central Puget Sound - I saw a single humpback just south of Southworh ferry... Very near shore heading northbound. Went to Harper pier hoping to see it near Blake Island, but never saw it again. Lots of wind waves made for difficult viewing. -Noreen Ferris

12:07 p.m. - north Puget Sound - Humpback in Saratoga Passage, mid channel, in front of Woodland Beach, Camano Island. Appeared to be heading south. Saw 4 blows, saw back and tail when he dove. Additional blows suggest several whales. -Krista Paulino

11:27 a.m. - north Puget Sound - humpback whale appears to be sleeping at the surface. I can see its back but not doing anything but floating in one spot. East of Point No Point and east of shipping lanes. As seen from north Edmonds. -Stu Davidson

11:54 a.m. - I have a friend, Elysia, who now lives on the water in Port Townsend (lucky girl!). This is who they saw off their porch. Here are the co-ordinates they posted: so this was NW of Pt. Hudson, NW of Chetz, NW of red bell #2, between Pt Hudson and Pt. Wilson. They're excited to know the identities if anyone has any idea. I know it's a long shot. -Traci Wilson

We received a message from 10:13 this morning from a woman reporting a pod of orcas off the south end of "the island" about 1/2 mile west of the south end ferry dock. Did not say which island but we are guessing Whidbey, and Clinton ferry dock? She said she has never seen this many before - but did not say how many or what direction they were traveling. We have left a message asking for more information, will post when we receive it - but perhaps someone should be looking in Possession Sound as well?

8:50 a.m. - line of sight to the humpback currently between Point No Point light house and a mile north of Edmonds ferry terminal. The whale seems in a feeding pattern milling back and forth north and south- still east of shipping lane.
8:20 a.m. - humpback east of Point No Point and east of shipping lane. Coast Guard ice breaker ship #20 just passed the whale on its port side as the ship's heading south. -Stu Davidson

Observed from Sunset Hill park above Shilshole. 7-9 full breaches just NE of yellow mid channel buoy southbound towards West Point. We watched for about 40 min. Then lost sight of whale after a long dive. -Lance King

North central Puget Sound - 2 humpback adults blowing and diving at Point No Point tonight from 3:55 until dusk. I was out walking at Point No Point today from 3:55pm until after 5:00pm and saw two large adult Humpbacks feeding together. They were blowing and diving fairly shallow which gave me the opportunity to see most of their bodies. Wow! What a show! They were moving south of the lighthouse, across in front of the lighthouse and over to Norwegian Point and back again. A few times they were quite close to the beach because the tide was in. Amazingly, beautiful animals! -Jann Clare

October 27
SUCCESS! Bigg's killer whale in Case Inlet. After four hours, I was on my way home and just happened to look right as I made the final stretch into Pierce County along Case Inlet and boom! I caught a dorsal out of the corner of my eye. I did a u-turn and parked on the side of the road, then ran up to a guy with a waterfront house and asked if I could use his yard to take pictures. He was very cool about it, and even went to look at them from his deck. I was treated to a twilight show by a male, female, and a baby.

4:00 p.m. - Four or maybe five orcas were in Pickering Passage today. There were two adults and two or three young ones. We saw them moving northbound to the east of Jarell Cove. We watched them approach then pass us, but we could not see them beyond McLane Cove. -Kevin Stoops

8:51 a.m. - There are at least five Orcas cruising down the middle of Pickering Passage - just off the tip of Harstine Point and headed toward the bridge. There was at least one juvenile and one that seemed exceptionally large. -Ruby Luby

One Orca partially breached creating a big splash very near shore, and then both Orcas appeared to be circling the area while along side each other for a couple minutes. 11:34 a.m. - Just below Lisabuela being followed by boats way too close...also saw two dolphins trailing behind the 4 orcas and not too far back. Dolphins were also headed north up Colvos. -Lark Pelling

We have seen them in front of the marina on the east side as well. Orcas were passing through, headed north on the west side of Blake Island. 1:38 p.m. - It's making it's way north again, mid channel between Blake Island and Harper/Southworth
12:24 p.m. - Unless there's two, it's now between Blake Island & Manchester, about mid channel heading south towards Southworth. Small white sail boat trying to catch up to it.
11:51 a.m. - Just saw it dive off the NW tip of Blake Island, mid channel. -Melissa Bird
9:38 a.m. - central Puget Sound - My friend Scott just called to tell me the Humpback is off Manchester ( off Olympiad Dr. Between Southworth & Harper) still, and that he thinks there are 3 of them today. He is seeing blows too far apart to be the same Whale. I asked if he thought the others could be the dolphins, and he said he doesn't think so. Closer to the Kitsap side but heading towards Blake Island. -Melissa Bird

11:50 a.m. - I first spotted it (humpback) from the window at my house, then jumped in the car and saw it at a viewpoint from shore (which is where I took this photo) We live in North Nanaimo. The picture was taken from a location called Rocky Point #2. It is the 12th whale I've seen from home in the last year. Multiple pod calls audbile. Last night Barbara and David heard and identified southern resident orcas in Johnstone Strait. They had been seen earlier in the afternoon near Ripple Point making their way north. Then this afternoon Jared called to say the southern residents were off Donegal Head. Very soon after we heard calls! But the calls were northern G clan calls, specifically I31/I11 type calls!!! What the??? We told Jared. He said "seriously?" because he was looking at southern residents clustered together behind a tug heading into Blackfish Sound. We could hear the southerns but the G clan calls sounded closer. Jared then reported that there was a group close to Flower Island. Was this the G clan group? They then came into view. Jared followed this group in and identified them as a mix of I31s and I11s. (northern G clan orcas) As he followed this group he watch the southern residents move close to Burnt Point on the Hanson Island side and soon they were in our view. There were a lot of southern residents!!!! The northerns chose to stay on the far shore almost parallel to the southerns who moved to mid channel. The vocals dropped off. The groups progressed through the Pass and out of view. Whew! So beautiful! So unusual, once in a lifetime! But it was not all yet over. We had seen another group over on the far shore and eventually this group made their way into Blackney well after the others. It turned out to be the A34s with A46!. There was just enough light to see them and Jared came back to do a quick confirmation before heading home. Southern and northern residents are not known to mix and this was a close. So amazing, we are all blown away and thankful too. -Helena & Paul

This evening I was paddle boarding near Blake Island when an Orca came fishing nearby. The whale stayed in the harbor for nearly an hour. It was magical. I also heard that there was a grey whale in the same area this morning. She was alone. She was large. When she breathed it sounded like a freight train. She was diving, swimming back and forth, and slapping her tail. At first she was in the ferry lane then eventually swam toward Manchester/Bainbridge. A guy on a sail boat said the whale was chasing Coho Salmon in the ferry lane. He saw her too. When the whale returned 30~40 minutes later a fisherman was witnessing her as well. A woman and her son on shore in South worth could see her too. She was Definitely larger than a porpoise or dolphin...it was a magnificent whale. I am so happy and honored to have seen her. -Gina O'Brien

Wow 2 days in a October with over 50 Southern Resident orcas is very cool! When we first arrived with them at 1230 they were leaping and spy hopping, tail lobbing and barrel rolling. K35 Sonata (left, male born 2002) with his niece and nephew K36 Yoda (middle, born 2003) and K26 Lobo (right, born 1993) K44 Ripple (male - born 2011), K16 Opus (female - born 1985), K21 Cappucino (born 1986)....very happy full belly Orca me thinks! We left approximately 50 Southern residents at Ripple Point heading north in Johnstone Strait at 1600hrs. -Nick Templeman

...We found members of J, K and L pods in bound/foraging south of Cape Mudge lighthouse(north end of Georgia St, south end of Johnstone St.) by approximately 2 miles. Once on scene, we started scanning and as far as 4 miles away we were seeing dorsal fins! In 20 years of operating I have never witnessed all 3 pods together, nor have I ever seen them come up this way ALL together, usually its smaller sub pods. L115 and L47, L72 Racer and K14 Lea, L91 in the foreground, L83. There were many chum salmon showing on the surface, lots of surface foraging behavior from the orcas. About 15 animals shot off and surfed towards the cape at 15 knots or more. We left the pods foraging together on Chum salmon not 2 miles south of Cape Mudge @ 1800hrs! We found a mom (left) and calf (right) humpback pair in Rosario Strait and later found a pod of Dall's porpoise. The calf tail slapped several times, and as if in response, mom threw her tail in the air. It was chilly and gray, but the water was unbelievably flat calm. -Rachel Haight

4:30 p.m. - 1 humpback whale and 1 Pacific white-sided dolphin...We've been hearing reports from friends about a humpback whale and its dolphin friend in south Colvos Passage for about 6 weeks. We went out on our sailboat hoping for a sighting. We spent about 30 minutes watching them roll, breach, and investigate boats (including ours). We capture many cool photos, including two that show the dolphin jumping over the top of the whale! We understand that both humpbacks and Pacific white sides are rare in the south Sound. The dolphin seems healthy -- VERY full of energy, speed, and social curiosity, porpoising over the humpback. Can't vouch for the health of the whale, but it was very active. -Cheryl Mikkelborg

5:03-5:10 p.m. - This is just to report 2 very, very large orcas just traveled by in front of our house at the top of the north face of Double Bluff, my sighting as they were passing the green navigation buoy to the left (south) heading north towards Bush Point. They were maintaining a distance of about 400 yards off the shore, surfacing together about every 50 to 100 yards. In no hurry, just slowly/moderately passing along. By the time I got the camera and tripod out to record, by the time I had found them on the screen and focused they submerged and did not rise again. The sound of their breathing was clearly heard and caused our two dogs to bark at them. This did not seem to disturb them in any way; most likely since we are some 85' above the shore and water. -Michael Moore

Tonight, around 5:30 we were on the beach in Mukilteo near the lighthouse and saw 2 whales, near Whidbey Island. I thought they were Gray Whales at first, but upon research I discovered they were humpbacks. They were heading south, then heading north, then heading south again. Moving slowly and showing their tails. It was wonderful. When we left, they seemed to be heading north. -Holly C Cook

These two boys are affectionately called "The Twins" and are known to researchers as T77A and T49C. They're actually not related but are frequently seen traveling together. But it's not just that that's earned them their nickname, they also have very similar notches in their dorsal fins. Today they were seen heading north in Rosario Strait and spent some time hunting at Lummi Rocks. -Sara Hysong-Shimazu

There was lots of fishing going on in the whale's primary forage habitat off the west side of San Juan Island. I am always amazed at how effortless the whales navigate the lay of the nets. K35 "Sonata" does a half breach with San Juan Island in the background. I haven't seen J2 "Granny" for a while, but here she is! An absolutely GORGEOUS day on the water today! It's October right?!? What a great day full of orcas ... first I got to see the T034s and T037s while I was working, then I went out again to see T049C and T077A (aka the "twins"), as well as K and L pod. Watching the resident orcas come into the Salish Sea in a large line, surfacing in respiratory synchronisty was definitely the highlight of my day! There's nothing that compares. -Heather MacIntyre

We were lucky enough to spend time with some of the SRKW's in front of Sooke. We caught up to them by Otter Point and they were very wide spread heading East. Not sure if I am interpreting this right. (no one else reported seeing orcas to confirm type of cetaceans-ALB) Lots of unusual looking activity. I have only seen humpbacks since then. It was amazing...I remember seeing knuckles (through my binoculars) when the whale was just breaking the surface of the water while cruising. They were on the back end of the body, near the tail. Plus, this whale leapt vertically out of the water. At one point, it's entire body was perpendicular to the horizon. -Carmelo Quetell

Kevin Lungren and I followed the T100, T101, T124, and T124A pods as they swam northward through Saratoga Passage, through Deception Pass, and northward into Rosario Strait. We watched members of the superpod make two kills well before they swam under the Deception Pass Bridge. Shortly after going through the pass they all appeared to go into sleep mode, swimming in three tight groups as they traveled northward into Rosario Strait. -Bart Rulon

5:00 p.m. - I observed orcas, from a kayak, roughly 1/2 mile off the coast of the Magnolia neighborhood/Discovery park in Seattle. In talking with someone later, who had been observing the pod's travels from the coast, I understand they had been traveling south down the sound. I paddled out from the coast towards them, and observed them surfacing for probably 10 minutes, after which they "disappeared." I waited another 10 minutes in the area looking for any signs, but didn't see any. This other person had been watching the for 45 minutes, she said. At one point I saw 4 in succession. Someone else I talked to said she had seen what she thought was a whole pod spread out. -Noah Townsend

Around 10:30 a.m. we spotted a single humpback moving south west of the shipping channel. We followed the spout and then to our surprise, he breeched. What a sight for our visiting friends. We live on east side of Marrowstone Island. The breech took place heading south just before East Beach Park. Shortly after that we also spotted a pod or two of orcas east of the shipping channel. We could view them best with binoculars. At least six were sighted heading south. -Patricia Ives

9:00 & 10:00 a.m. - We saw them too. Traveling north from Edmonds to Everett about 9:00 am. First I saw two, then an hour later (around 10am) saw 2 or 3 more in same area heading north from Edmonds toward Everett, then one of them veered off to the west toward Point No Point. He stopped to feed and dove down and showed us his tail. He was swimming in different directions before heading toward Whidbey and then west again. It was the coolest sight I'd ever seen! -Wendy Nelson

This is the fin whale that's been hanging around south of Lopez Island for the past few weeks. I finally saw it today. Fin whales are the 2nd largest animal on earth behind the blue whale. This is the first time a fin has been seen in this area for at least 10 yrs. I've heard contradicting things about it and have been wanting to get a look. Fins are seen routinely in Southern Ca. and I've seen many. They are also an animal we had to know to complete naturalist training in Ca. Although they can reach 75-80 feet in length I would estimate this animal at 50-55 feet. Either a sub-adult or just a smallish adult. It appears to be healthy and was behaving normally, maintaining a rhythmic sequence of 8 minute long dives with 3 breaths on the surface in between. Based on the bowel movement it had while we watched it seems to be feeding just fine. The whale has penella balaenopterae pits but so far I have not seen any penella remaining attached. They are a warm water parasitic copepod and would likely detach in the cold water here. Good to see this whale. I hope it hangs around for awhile. The common murres on the other side of the whale are about 1 foot long and give some size perspective. -James Grehsam

We went up to Sooke B.C. as a superpod was reported, when we arrived, the fog was so thick we could barely see anything! When out of the fog we were surrounded by appx. 10 resident orcas, most of which looked like L's including L25 Ocean Sun and the two L babies!... -Janine Harles

Got word of some apparent humpbacks seen between the Edmonds and Point No Point this AM by birders. "I saw quite a few blows and several backs of what looked like Humpbacks in a 30 second period about 8:30am this morning from the pier. The quick frequency of the blows made me think I was seeing at least two whales. They were far enough that I could only see the very top of their backs and their blows though so hard to know." The direction they said would put them between PNP and Whidbey. -Josh Adams
