This was probably one of my best minke encounters, as they're known for being very sneaky! -Bonnie Gretz

Day report: 6-26-22, J-Pod, Haro Strait, SJI - 11:55 -12:45 - J-Pod southbound at Point Edwards. Spread out and traveling quickly, the orcas were 1/3 to 2 miles from shore. With heat distortion over the water, photography was suspended unless they were close in. There was some porpoising from one member but it didn't last long and there were 3-4 breaches to the south. The trailing members were J37 Hy'Shqa and her daughter J59. Surfacing often the pair moved quickly accompanied in the distance by SoundWatch, J59 tight to her mother's side. Both SoundWatch and StraitWatch were present on the west side and did a great job of stopping the recreational boats and sending them out to the west to circle around J-Pod!

14:40 - The orcas have passed close to Bush Point boat ramp at a steady pace southbound
.
Timing is of the essence with whale watching, and today was no exception. Bush Point boat ramp was the place to be as the intrepid T65As together with the T77s advanced with a dash of panache from Lagoon Point along the Whidbey shoreline. Quick, short bursts of speed alternated with long down times, and they succeeded in surprising spectators as their rising dorsal fins suddenly sliced through the surface of the water, accompanied by loud exhalations carrying on the breeze. Despite the heat of the day, their powerful presence as they passed sent a shiver down the spine (all photos taken from shore). -Sandy Pollard - photos by Sandy Pollard, June 26, 2022

*
There is one photo where one of the orcas has a line around it’s dorsal fin [intestines!]. It seemed they were feeding and stayed just off our dock for quite some time. It is just so special to see and to hear them! We are really fortunate to live here and be able to share in such a special moment. My daughter and her friend, who has never seen a whale “in real life” are here visiting. Everyone was so excited, ovens were on and all the food was abandoned uncooked as we all ran to the dock! My daughter spotted a giant fin and screamed “whales!” and I’m not kidding this time. It could not have been more perfect and they were brilliant as we watched them breech, and tail flap and roll. Magic! -Jan Willis

Sun, Jun 26 - Tacoma Narrows - 19:45 - Saw what I’m fairly certain was a minke on the north side of the Tacoma Narrows at around 19:45 this evening. Definitely a baleen whale and definitely had a dorsal fin, but the fin (and the whale) was much smaller than that of a humpback. The proportions were too small to even be a juvenile humpback. I was driving so I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure it was a minke. -Dave Mullbock

HUMPBACK WHALES - Sun, Jun 26 - South Sound - Last Sunday 6/26, during our mini-heat spell, I went paddle-boarding about 17:30, but it was still so warm that I headed to McMicken Island and hid out in the lee of the island for some shade. While hanging out there I heard the humpback blow and spotted it south of Herron Island. Eventually it headed south of Fudge Point, next thing I knew the whale surfaced about 150 yards away, heading back north, and treated me to a close pass! It stayed on the surface for about 5 breaths. -David Berliner

12:15 - 12:45 - The L12 sub-group of L-Pod traveled southbound 1 mile south of Landbank Westside Preserve
. The 7 orcas were moving quickly and were spread out. The closest to me were L25 Ocean Sun and L77 Matia but I couldn't ID the others except for the large male 1/2 mile out which I am assuming was L85 Mystery. A pair of humpbacks traveled north at the same time but were closer in to shore then the orcas were.
00:01 - Multiple orcas blows heard. Orcas traveling northbound 1.2 miles south of Landbank. J-Pod met w sub-group L12s six hours ago just south of Landbank Westside Preserve then traveled together down island. This must be them returning from the south. BELUGA - Fri, June 24 - ~10:30-11 - Kevin Stephenson called on the 28th to report a whale he saw on Friday, June 24th around 10:30-11 am in the north end Agate pass about 1 mile south of Suquamish dock. The whale was heading northbound (as he was transiting southbound in his boat). He is on his boat year-round, familiar with and sees all species of whales and this was like no one he’s ever seen. He thinks it was a beluga. Whale was 12-15 feet long, had a bulbous head, was tawny to white in color. Whale surfaced several times and continued northbound. Tried for a photo but by time got it out whale north and he had to keep focus on getting himself safely through the narrow passage. (reported as beluga, but not photos to confirm -alb)

GRAY WHALES - Fri, Jun 24 - Oak Harbor - 20:14 - Marlyna Stewart called to report a gray whale in the Oak Harbor area [approx. 48.26758 , -122.65361]. They have been watching the whale since about 7:30-7:45. When they first saw the gray she was in the middle of the entrance to the harbor (Oak Harbor) heading out toward open water. When she circled back she was on the other side of the entrance to Oak Harbor on the Maylor Point side, feeding super close in maybe 10-20 feet, moving back and forth feeding about the length of a football field. Whale was coming back towards the harbor at the time of the call. Beautiful to watch, rounding up the shrimp by spinning onto her side, exposing her fin and part of her fluke above surface as she was gliding along the mud then spinning back up. Her blows ~ 4-5 feet tall. Whale was going to town having quite a feast for about an hour. Really cool sight to behold right here near the marina in shallow waters.

Day report: 6-23-22, J-Pod, Haro Strait - 08:27 - 09:26 - A line of J-Pod members traveling in a closely spaced line southbound past Point Edwards, just south of Landbank Westside Preserve. They were traveling tight, not rising much out of the water. Slowly the line of orcas crossed in front of me. Surface vocalizations were heard. I got into the car to follow them to a private beach near Pile Point and when I arrived at 08:53, they had just begun a turn back to the north. I hurried back to my previous spot where I found J-Pod milling, 1 mile south of Landbank. At 09:10 they turned back towards the south and again I heard surface vocalizations. I drove back to the private beach to watch them pass Pile Point heading south at 09:26.

Fifteen years ago, the L12s were a classic westside shuffle group, spending a good portion of the summer plying the waters between Salmon Bank and Lime Kiln. More recently, they've become even more infrequent visitors than the rest of the Southern Residents, becoming one of the most rarely encountered groups in inland waters. It was thus an extra special surprise to see L25 and her sub-group show up earlier this week with J-Pod. -photo and ID by Monika Wieland Shields, June 23, 2022

Direction of travel : NW towards Port Townsend, not moving very fast
Behaviors observed: The baby seemed playful, they looked relaxed, like they were leisurely traveling
If orcas, any males?:
Any unusual markings?:
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your encounter?: The baby seemed playful, breaching once and throwing their flipper out of the water
FOLLOW UP: I looked at the chart to be sure, but I’m pretty positive they were minke. The size and coloring would be hard to be sure of as the sun was causing some glare on the water. They seemed pretty small for a whale though and they weren’t black. The tails also looked very similar to pictures I looked up. I had a hard time identifying them at first, since I’d never seen whales that looked like that before. It’s possible I’m wrong, but it was definitely not an orca, gray, humpback or a porpoise. The dorsal fins looked like the dorsal fin on the minke whales on the chart. Hope that helps! Remi

Thu, Jun 16 - Skagit Bay - We had a bit of a surprise Thursday night in Skagit Bay. We had our deck doors open and were watching TV when we *heard* a whale. I ran down to the bulkhead and a short while later it surfaced again not more than 100’ offshore. We then watched for the next half hour as it slowly explored the shoreline over to Kukutali and then up around Flagstaff Point, surfacing every one and a half to two and half minutes. I posted some photos on a La Conner Facebook group and someone said that after it went around Kukutali, it did the same in Similk Bay. Link to [Video 1] [Video 2] -Kee Hinckley

UNIDENTIFIED BALEEN WHALES -
Tue, Jun 14 - Possible juvenile humpback alone off Port Townsend. I would like to report this, even if I am unsure of what I am reporting, because if indeed there is a juvenile humpback in distress off Port Townsend, I would be one of several voices that would help confirm the event. Rick and I bought a coffee at the espresso shop and walked down to the water and sat on the seawall shortly before 5 o’clock today. I watched a small (25’?) whale, which I believe was definitely a whale because of the way it was swimming out in the water at about 75 yards. The sun was out and I distinctly, repeatedly saw the dorsal fin as being the same profile that I can only identify in a humpback whale. This animal would flounder a little at the surface exposing the dorsal fin and then pop its head up just for a brief second (as if it was peeking above water), and then continue to very slowly swim at that distance parallel to the shore. -Judy Eidge

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS (fish-eating ecotype) - Sat, Jun 11 - A sighting of K Pod off the Oregon coast! From Orca Behavior Institute: “Well look who we have here! Check out this video of K-Pod heading south off Coos Bay, Oregon on June 11! What looks to be their new calf, first seen in a video from the Oregon Coast on April 22, is visible at the 0:49 and 1:03 marks. Interestingly, the calf does not appear to be with K20, who it surfaced next to in the previous video, so the plot thickens as to who the mother might be! We will anxiously await K-Pod's return to the Salish Sea and an official update from the Center for Whale Research, who for over 45 years have documented the births and deaths of the Southern Resident killer whale population.” -Link to video taken by Floyd Russell: [Video]

Orcas were coming from Double Bluff area, mid channel, but were trending more towards Kitsap side as they continued south. They were viewing without binoculars, and could see the orcas well, so think possibly two males.

15:00-19:40 -
We’ve had a real treat watching Gray 2440 make the rounds to all its favorite snacking spots up here this afternoon. I first heard that there was a gray feeding down by Polnell around 3pm-ish, and it veerrrry slowly made its way up here to Mariners’ Cove, arriving into view at 4:45pm (that’s super slow progress compared to normal). It chowed down at the Happy Meal mudflats for a good half hour, splashing and waving, and then gradually continued snacking up the beach past Mariners’ Cove (northbound). I confirmed that it was 2440 with the double-hump and white patch. I thought it had moved on to the north, but then around 6pm I spotted puffs midchannel southbound and it appeared to be heading back toward Polnell. Friends at Polnell saw it coming but said it changed direction and was heading back up the beach toward Mariner’s Cove once again. It was zooming along this time and I saw it just a few minutes later, around 7:40pm. I confirmed that it was still 2440, and it cruised quickly up the beach and off to the north. -Marianne Parry

BIGG'S KILLER WHALES - Thu, Jun 2 – South Sound (T64B's & T65As) - Excerpts from Jami Cantrell day report: "…here’s my story from the day! was watching the T65As and T64Bs travel between Fox and McNeil Islands headed southeast through Carr Inlet. Once I no longer had my eyes on them I headed to the Fox Island fishing pier to see if they were going to go south or north after exiting Carr.

I always go to the Fishing Pier in hopes that one day I'll catch them under the pier, swimming just beneath my feet. I had been talking to people who were there with me about it before the orcas got there. It's been one of my biggest dreams, ever since I was a wee lassie.

A gentleman and I stood out there waiting in the rain for about 30 minutes before anyone else got there, and then we waited about 45 minutes after that… I have never seen an orca breach that close to me. Furthermore, I have never seen them swim so close to me before. As they went under the pier, I put my camera down and just lived in the moment.

Then, to top off an already incredible experience, they turned back down Hales Passage and headed towards the Fox Island Bridge! I have been trying to see them from this bridge since I lived on the island like 6 years ago!...Well, yet again, not only did they just travel under the bridge, they stayed for 15 minutes! We were all pretty much positive they were hunting a seal, right under the bridge! They kept popping up right in front of us and it was obvious they were just as intrigued with us as we were them. I made eye contact with Ooxjah (I spell it wrong every time lol) multiple times as he glided by just beneath the surface…They swam off into the sunset, and I left with my heart full….Happy Orca Month and Pride Month!" -Jami Cantrell
*
Excerpts from Hillary Butler day report:" I first saw them earlier in the day from by my house. We took the kids out, but a rain pour scared us back home…But knew if close to Fox Island Bridge, I would need my phone and not my camera. I learn they were trending up, so I kept on the mission for FI. Make it just as I see Ooxjaa approaching bridge. I was going to make it, after wifey surely didn't think I would make it in time…Just feeding and playing with everyone that was blessed to catch them hang around the bridge for about 5 minutes. Here is an awesome memory I will enjoy forever. It really was the most connected I have felt certainly. It was like they wanted to say hello and hang for a while with me. Thank you Orcas! See you next adventure!" -Hillary Butler - video by Hillary Butler, June 2, 2022

13:48 to Sunset -
Had a couple of wonderful encounters with our beautiful orcas again today! First saw a group of approx. 4 on the Peninsula side of the Carr Inlet opposite Kopachuck Park at approx. 1:48pm...I thought they had headed north but somehow they had turned back, and I saw them again this time around mid-channel heading southbound past Horsehead Bay at 3:54pm. Lots of breaching, spyhopping, tail slapping going on, but they were pretty spread out so hard to catch! Delighted I caught the double breach- first time I’ve ever seen that! Then 3rd time was the charm as the sun was setting tonight! First saw a large dorsal fin close to Horsehead Bay heading south before I heard and then saw at least 2 over on the Peninsula side heading northbound. Another separate Orca seemed to be heading south from Kopachuck, mid channel so not sure how many there were total in the end!! Really hope they’re going to stick around for a while... -Jennifer Swenson

SOUTHERN RESIDENTS - Wed, Jun 1 - Haro Strait (J Pod) - Fantastic day on San Juan Island with Jill Hein...we decided to go the night before, and wow, it was amazing....seeing members of J pod from San Juan County Park, Lime Kiln and Landbank!!!! Sort of like the "old days" when they were here much more often! Thanks to Ariel Yseth for help with i.d.'s....still not sure so maybe Ariel Yseth help me out if I got them wrong? So good to see Cindy Hansen who helped us with updates...spotty service around there! What a treat to see little J59, just about 14 weeks old, so active and playful, especially so close to shore at Landbank! And my adoptee, Star!!! -Bonnie Gretz

A last minute decision Tues night had Bonnie Gretz and I on an early ferry to San Juan Island Weds morning in hopes of seeing J-pod – WOW – we started at County Park and ended at Land Bank – with several visits to those viewing places - and Lime Kiln – throughout the day. We saw many members of J-pod with CLOSE pass-by’s at Lime Kiln and Landbank. WOW again! We mostly saw members of the J14s and J17s, but am so rusty with IDs – thankfully Ariel Yseth was with us to keep us abreast. The biggest thrill was seeing J59, the newest calf (mom is J37 Hy ‘Shqa) born about 3 months ago – good news being a girl – she brings some hope to the survival of our Endangered Southern Resident whales. It was almost like ‘old times’ – so so good to see J-pod! -Jill Hein

Michelline Day Report (06:45-20:05 J-Pod Sighting, Haro Strait, SJI
06:45 - 07:00, J-Pod southbound, spread out and traveling very slowly, 1/3 to 1/2 mile from shore, 1 mile south of Landbank's Westside Preserve. At 07:00, 2 of the orcas stalled, milling, soon trending north.
07:10 - Direction change, J-Pod northbound.
07:31 - J19 Shachi and companion (partial saddle, probably J40 Suttles) inbound due east coming within 50' of the shore. They made a quick pass and then headed back out to join the others traveling to the north including J26 Mike, J41 Eclipse with J58 Crescent, J56 Tofino. Most were 1/3 to 1/2 mile from shore.
08:00 - J-Pod out of sight past Point Edwards to the north.
10:30 - 11:05, J-Pod southbound, very spread out, not much surfacing.
11:50 - Reported by a neighbor near Pile Point, a group of 12 Wave Runners, a type of jet ski, slowed too close to J-Pod who where milling near Pile Point. I heard tremendous engine roar to the south and the group raced past my position. I called Fish and Wildlife Police who took a report over the phone and followed up with the neighbor.
13:50 - 15:25, J-Pod northbound, spread out 1/4 - 3/4 mile from shore.1
6:00 - 17:00, J-Pod southbound, spread out, 1/3+ mile from shore except for a tight group of 4, J31 Tsuchi, J56 Tofino, J46 Star and J36 Alki.
