November 30
November 28 & 30 - Ken Balcomb relayed a report that 35 or so whales were up off Comox, BC on Monday 28 November, and photos were taken. Js were visually recognized and CWR will look at all of the photos to see if Ks were there also. They were off Eagle Point, San Juan Island, at 1525 this afternoon (30th) very spread, and apparently south of Seabird in the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca at dark.

Monday afternoon 5 Orcas (including adult male) - Bigg's killer whales (Transients) were spotted heading north past East Beach County Park on Marrowstone Island. Lots of activity: playing, possibly feeding (diving) splashing and hitting tail against water. Traveling north. Also looked like a very young (baby) was swimming next to momma? -Patricia Ivers

Saw an orca all the way down by PSNS (Puget Sound Naval Station, Sinclair Inlet, Bremerton 1:15 and again at 1:45 right after the Port Orchard Marina. First sighting headed towards Gorst while we were driving to the ferry and second sighting headed back towards shipyard as we were driving home. Seemed to be just the one that we saw. -Dan Jones

The T137s came up from south Puget Sound while the T37As and T99s were coming from the north.All pods met up around downtown Seattle. Post meet up all pods eventually all began a southbound journey. Matriarch T137 (born 1983) off Alki Point, West Seattle in choppy seas and an approaching rain squall. Her offspring not far away. (ID confirmation by Sara Hysong-Shimazu) They went into Elliot Bay and made a catch/kill. Then milled and eventually headed south very quickly, rounding Alki point and then disappearing when the squall started and i went home. -Kersti E Muul

11:41 a.m. - Off Ballard locks. East side headed south. No ID yet

11:00 a.m. - North Puget Sound Penn Cove - Sighting 5-6 orcas. Small pod, one male, 4-5 females and one baby came in and out of Penn Cove on 11/25 and 26. Passed through at least three times. Traveling and feeding. -Elena Wagner, November 26, 2016

South Puget Sound - I watched them for about an hour in Case Inlet south of Herron Island, between 3:30 & 4:30pm, trending south. Not in a hurry, diving for 1-2 minutes at a time, with some changes in direction. There were at least 4 of them: one male and 3 likely females or juveniles. Unfortunately, they were being shadowed by a jet ski, who was much too close. Will post some (distant) pictures later. -Dave Berliner

2:56 p.m. - I just saw them again heading south off the eastern side of Harstine Island. I saw them in Case Inlet at the Northern Point of the Island. We counted four orcas. They went southeast towards Key Peninsula, on the part of it that is south of Herron Island.
11:24 a.m. - Seeing them from Pickering Passage looking South. They are northbound. Watching from Harstine Island Bridge. -Connor O'Brien

9:30 a.m. - Krissie Carl relayed report: We have a report of two Orcas in Shelton Washington. They were seen leaving Oakland Bay through Hammersly Inlet. Reported by Mary McLaughlin.

8:50 a.m. - a group of 4-5 individuals, one very large male, several females and juveniles and maybe a fairly young whale were swimming close together. The group swam back and forth from the gravel bath to the log staging area several times then dawn back out Hammersley about 9:15. Possibly hunting seals and sea lions. No clear photos unfortunately. ...At 1218, with 'Big Eyes' I saw distant whales in mid-Haro Strait heading south very spread out and taking long dives. They acted like Transients I thought to myself, but at 1237 a distant male appeared with an open saddle! Distant whales are always better than no whales, especially this time of year! That's K21 Cappuccino heading down the middle of Haro Strait this afternoon, with stunning clouds and the Olympic Mountains behind him. 2:50 p.m. - Looks like they could be heading for Puget Sound!

1:53 p.m. - Start hearing faint echolocation and one call on Lime Kiln hydrophone.

11:58 a.m. - I just received another report of 6 to 8 orca ½ mile north of James Island. They are west bound towards Thatcher Pass and there is at least 1 juvenile in the group. -Marie Waterman, WSF
10:55 a.m. - 10 orca were seen lingering off south side of Mandarte Island. Not really traveling anywhere. Reported to be quite surface active. (Mandarte Island is north Haro Strait, north of Sidney Island, BC)

Bigg's killer whales (Transients) - North Puget Sound - Of all the years I've been here, I've never seen an Orca in the wild. I carry my camera everywhere I go just in case I hear of a report of whales. I got a text from a friend and left my company and the end of the Apple Cup. Grabbed my camera and son and rushed out the door! We were able to follow 5 Orcas from Penn Cove down to Monroe Landing. My pictures aren't perfect, but the experience was amazing. Just listening to my son's adorable screams of excitement and pure joy made the whole experience just wonderful. I am so happy that they have finally returned to our beautiful island and I hope they continue to do so. I will never tire of their beauty and will run out the door every chance I can to see them. -Cynthia Vick Allen

1400 - Saw what appears to be a juvenile humpback based size breach multiple times just off shore across from the park at point Ruston in Tacoma. Tail flukes were small. November 24
Penn Cove - Late last night (24th) the Surf was rough and it was very windy but I'm sure I saw one (orca). Yes it was to the right of the dock/pier just past a crab buoy. Maybe around 8:30 pm. -Kelly Melton

2:20 p.m. - Orca Sighting Penn Cove. 5 orcas (including 1 adult male). The Orcas swam right past, going toward the Captain Whidbey Inn. After about half an hour they swam back toward Monroe Landing. -Joy Thompson

Orca sighting 11/24/16 at 3:30 Discovery Bay. To the best of our limited knowledge there were 5 Orcas (Large adult with baby, another adult and two juvenile sized whales) that appeared to be eating in Discovery Bay. There were many Sea Gulls while they circled and ate. We watched from our condo at Worldmark Discovery Bay (Orcas Dr, Port Townsend). After eating there were multiple breaches by the juveniles celebrating there feast. They then slowly made their way to the north toward the sound. -Tom Miller

3:30 (Thanksgiving) - Unidentified baleen whales - I saw a single whale blow in north Budd/Eld inlets heading toward Squaxin Island. It was pouring rain and getting dark so I never saw another blow. I took some incredible photos of T137s today...first time I have captured a breach. it took my breathe away. I love watching orcas from shore, something about it, it's just so natural... first saw them from across the street as it looked like they came as far north to Baby Island and turned around again to go back south to Langley.... around 11:45 am. they showed up out here. Then I couldn't stand it, had to follow them to Langley where I lost track of them after hitting up Sandy Point, but I was surely orca blessed today...with some orca healing.
1:10 p.m. - They have passed Sandy Point and are heading towards Clinton.

2:00 p.m. - Saw two whales surfacing just about 75-100 yards off of Browns Point Lighthouse Park in Tacoma around 2 pm today. They were either humpbacks or grays, we didn't get a good enough glimpse to know for sure. They seemed to be hanging around but slowly heading south! Made our day! -Sophi Perkins

November 21
2:30-4:00 p.m. - Sighting in Holmes Harbor. One large male, two smaller adults, and a very young Orca came around Baby Island about 2:30 PM. Swam south toward Beverly Beach and then crossed to the west side of the harbor and continued south all the way to Freeland. They then turned north and swam back up the east side of the harbor....swam rapidly until they were south of Beverly Beach...They stopped and appeared to be feeding just south of Beverly Beach for about 30 minutes. Towards 4 PM they headed north again and left the harbor. -Randy Weisz

Hello from Henry Island! I so enjoy your updates weekly! Thank you! Is this the right place to report whale sightings? If so my husband and I saw at least 6 humpback whales off Spieden island on Wednesday November 16th at 12:30 pm. We were on our way to Roche Harbor when we saw them blow. We went to investigate and was amazed to see at least 6 humpback feeding over there and by Davidson Head. We lived in Maui for years so had no problem recognizing them. Stunning! 3:11 p.m. - 3 breaches in past 2 minutes. They are getting closer.
3:06 p.m. - 6 spotted from fort Casey still very south. 2 closer to Whidbey side most mid channel. Can't say for sure (if still northbound) been here about a half hour and seem to be in same general area. They haved moved north but not by much and not steadily. -Brandon Anderson

2:45 - 3:00 watched them from the ferry to Port Townsend. Still pretty far south, but seemed to be finally north of Lagoon. Would say a few are closer to Whidbey, but most are east side of mid-channel. Slowly trending north, but lots of circling and hopefully feeding.
2:09 p.m. - From Fort Casey, they are too far south to be sure, but it seems like they are further away, like they are southbound now. Maybe just milling and feeding. They appear to be between Lagoon, Bush and Marrowstone. -Connie Bickerton

11:45: Ann Linnea called in a report from friends on the beach near Bush Pt, they were seeing orca near the Bush Pt. Lighthouse, closer to the Marrowstone side of the Inlet. They had earlier also observed large numbers of Harbor Porpoise heading south.

2:10 p.m. - the group off Edmonds has angled NW directionally towards Admiralty Inlet, middle of the channel few miles south of Possession Point, South Whidbey with NOAA boat nearby collecting fecal samples. Still hard to say which way they'll commit at least for this group.

...Gray whale. It is alone, not in a pod. I have attached the best pictures I was able to get today... As of today, 9 November 2016, the gray whale was still hanging out. (see NOTE) As of tomorrow, 10 November 2016 he will have been in the area for three weeks...At this point, if you are able to ID this whale, could you let us know it's name or tag. 3:57 p.m. - We just saw a whale! We were taking the main down and saw/heard the blow. He has surfaced several times since then-we saw his back twice. Right now, he seems to be parallel with us. Too far away for photos, unfortunately-we stopped the boat and are sitting here-east of Hat Island in Possession Sound. Wow! That was exciting and unexpected! We are pretty sure it's a humpback. We haven't seen him on a few minutes, so we are going to head back to the Marina. How cool is that?! We are sailing-5.7 knots with jib only. At one point, we think he was only a few hundred yards from our boat. We first saw him around 3:40, heading south. -Sharon Ann Clark

We walked along as it swam leisurely toward Dalco until the west end of Owen Beach around 11:40. It mostly stayed shallow with a couple of deep dives along the way. 2:30 p.m. - Feeding Humpback Sighting. S/he was about half way between the south end of Vashon island and the North tip of Point Defiance park. Surfacing for air for 4 or 5 times, then diving for 4 or 5 minutes at a time, and resurfacing a couple hundred yards out from where last seen. I watched this pattern of behavior for about 90 minutes via kayak. I was viewing the whale at a distance of 100 to 300 yards for this period. At one point early on, the whale seemed to be curious about my actions and came very near the surface, after a long dive, just 20 ft in front of me. I was quite startled and quite elated! It did not appear to break the surface, but stirred up the water in front of me enough to set my kayak a-rocking! -Vince Walzem

10:24 a.m. - Hi there, we're at the Cliffside RV park on Whidbey Island NAS, near Rocky Point. There's been a whale, possibly 2, in the waters since last evening. Has it been reported or checked on? I find it strange to be hanging around vs traveling. I have not seen a dorsal fin nor fluke. It seems to be on the smaller side too. Just checking in. October 27 - November 4 - Received 3:52 p.m. - Last Thursday, 27 Oct 16, I noticed there was a single gray or humpback whale outside of where I work. He/she has been to the East of Smith Island cruising up and down along NAS Whidbey Island. We have seen it every day for the last eight days and he hasn't traveled more than two to five miles up and down the coast. It seems unusual that it hasn't moved on and it's not in a pod. I have worked here for two years and usually the whales just pass through if we see them at all. At first it was great to see it, but now we are worried. 5:05 p.m. - North Puget Sound - Humpback in Possession Sound just south of Clinton ferry terminal heading south. Spotted from Mukilteo Lighthouse. -Trent

Approx 6:00 p.m. - South Puget Sound - I watched the whale heading up north mid-channel until I could barely see him/her.
5:25 p.m. - Found it! Dalco, headed northwest toward Gig Harbor. -Lissa Brod Anderson

3:30 p.m. - Just spotted a few spouts and a fin, most likely humpback while waiting for the ferry headed to Point Defiance from Vashon!... Headed west along the Tacoma side. -Brindi Marina Jackson

1:30 p.m. - Commencement Bay at Copper Point. Humpback. Saw fluke tail and spouting. Traveling toward the port. Shortly after that, saw undulating orca. 2 p.m. saw humpback sticking it's face out of the water. -Bernadette Ronan

1:25 p.m. - saw some splashes by a small boat. Humpback just dove pointed SW in Dalco Passage just out from the Point Defiance ferry dock. -Cathy Baker

Approx 1:20 p.m. - I saw him/her at Dalco Pass... Lots of jumps! We went back to the beach, I'm obsessed with this Humpback! This time he/she wasn't doing much, I was getting a little worried. I think it was having a nap. Then, a boat went zooming past, I'm sure the people on board didn't even notice. After the boat went past He/she jumped out of the water about 5x!!! (photo below) BEAUTIFUL, the sound was incredible and so indescribable! -Desiree Sauve

11:37 a.m. - Also, it's closer to the Gig Harbor viewpoint (I can hear it blow) but stick with Dalco- you can't get close enough to the water to see it at the Gig Harbor point.
11:07 a.m. - Getting a lot of surface blows. Seems like a smaller whale but might be the height/distance.
10:59 a.m. - Humpback is back off Dalco viewpoint, 5 mile drive, Point Defiance. Just saw a small fluke. -Danielle Vance

3:13 p.m. - the 2nd smaller Humpback is below Dalco Passage Viewpoint, more towards Gig Harbor side, trending towards Colvos.
3:09 p.m. - still circling in Dalco, trending more towards Vashon and Colvos at the last surface (around 3:00). I'm leaving the beach.. Good luck everyone!
2:45 p.m. - still surfacing below Dalco Passage Viewpoint.
2:25 p.m. - larger one just surfaced about 400 ft. Off shore from me, below Dalco Passage Viewpoint! (see photo below)
2:01 p.m. - 2nd Humpback now approachin Vashon Ferry dock. Closer to Vashon side, heading towards Commencement Bay. This whale is much smaller.
1:50 p.m. - between Owen and Vashon, just west of the Vashon Ferry Terminal. More on the Vashon side. Few shallow dives followed by a deep dive. Still traveling towards Commencement Bay. -Melissa Burke

11:22 a.m. - I'm at the Dalco passage viewpoint. It just surfaced really close. Heard it but didn't see it. Close! -Jilll Clogston

I observed the whale from on the water this morning moving north and south (back and forth) in the center area of the Dalco/ Narrows/ Colvos Passages (the area between Point Defiance, Gig Harbor and Vashon Island). Slow surface rolls and breathing followed by dives. Same patterns I've seen the last several days. Was paddling and did not manage to get any good fluke shots. But a good size and healthy looking whale. -Dean Burke
