BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) -

Fri, Aug 30 - Nanaimo, BC
Sent via form submission from Orca Network
Name: Kathleen Byrne
Date of Sighting: August 30, 2024
Time: 7:06 PM
Species seen: A pod of orcas including a mom and her baby
Number of animals seen: 6
Where seen: Invermere Beach in Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island
Direction of travel : Heading North
Behaviors observed: Possibly hunting
If orcas, any males?: Don’t know
Any unusual markings?: Don’t know
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your encounter?: My husband and our dog were swimming when I noticed some weird waves around the sand bar. I didn’t think to say anything because it was fairly windy in general. Then all of a sudden a pod of orca’s popped up. A mother and baby were side by side and looked like, from what I could tell, were charging at my husband and our dog. I yelled at my husband and he started trying to swim and run to shore. For whatever reason the mom and baby turned around to meet the others in the pod and continued North. They could have easily reached my husband and our dog swimming, but again - left them alone and swam away. They were about 50 ft away from my husband and our dog.
We were all quite shocked to say the least! After the orcas had left, there was an abundance of seals swimming. I can provide 2 videos are they were all swimming away and my husband had felt more comfortable. We had our 5 year old son with us too, on the beach with me.
There were 2 other people at the beach who witnessed the incident.
Photos available?: Yes, I will email the photos to sightings@orcanetwork.org

A wonderful all day trip on Island Adventures Whale Watching (with huge thanks to Sam, Julieann, Shane and all the crew!), leaving the dock in Anacortes at 6 a.m.! Luckily they had plenty of coffee and a delicious catered breakfast. We motored out west to see the sun rise over Burrows Island, checked a sea lion having an early breakfast, big Steller's growling and playing, and many sea birds feasting on bait balls. We passed Race Rocks and Sheringham Lighthouse, looking for fins and blows. And found so many humpbacks out there! First was Merlin, MMY0038, who did a big breach then a multitude of chin slaps. After that, I lost count, at least up to 50 throughout the morning… a few decided to check us out and made very close passes (engines in neutral!) so we could see every detail of their beautiful, massive bodies! We got some good fluke shots, which is always so fun to see and know that we're contributing to citizen science by sharing them with HappyWhale.com. It was clear and sunny but with large rollers going west… thank goodness I don't get seasick! We turned back east and kept seeing more humpbacks, sometimes two to three together. We left them and caught up with the T49As (same pod I saw in the rain last Friday!) at Mandarti Island. they were the only orcas around this day! They were lurking around through the kelp forests, and generally traveling south east. We left them to check out the deer and sheep action on Spieden Island, and headed home with whale-filled happy hearts!  -photos by Bonnie Gretz, August 28, 2024

Sun, Aug 25 - San Juans (T75Bs) - This harbor seal had nerves of steel this morning, and s/he was rewarded for it! The T75Bs corralled a harbor seal into a small patch of free-floating kelp in San Juan Channel. The head of the seal is indicated by the arrow. Often the instinct of a seal is to bolt into open water (sometimes even jumping off the safety of a haul out into the water with the orcas!) but this one stayed put for a good half hour or more as the four Bigg's killer whales circled it.  The whales certainly could have torn the kelp apart, but we have seen on numerous occasions that for some reason they will not. This seal stayed in the kelp long enough that eventually the whales moved on, leaving the seal alive! We don't see many unsuccessful harbor seal hunts, but this pinniped's bravery while face-to-face with death was remarkable to watch. -Orca Behavior Institute -photo by Monika Wieland Shields, August 25, 2024

. Both boys (Strider I will (have to) post separately) traveling together very close to the south shore of Hope Island. They did not hunt during this time. But should have, 20 plus seals on the log booms and/or in the shallows. Even with binoculars and telephoto lenses on my side of the water and a mad dash to a friend's place at Carlyon Beach. They were on the move. Literally retraced their path from when they came in to when they left again. What looked like they were going to hit Boston Harbor and maybe Budd Inlet they did a super deep and long dive and ended up heading the opposite direction. Fri, Aug 23 - Haro Strait (T49As minus T49A1 & T49A2) - T49A Nan - T49A5 Nebula, T49A6 Charlie II, T49A Nan - On a dreary afternoon trip on IE5 when we found the T49As out by Stuart Island. Fog and drizzle made photos a challenge - but it was good to see this family again regardless. Good to be with friends too. -photos by Jill Hein, August 23, 2024

T49A3 Nat -
Many orcas around but a drippy day, so we headed north and caught up with the T49As at Stuart Island, where the water was calmer than further south. Matriarch is T49A Nan (b. 1986), sprouting son T49A3 Nat (b. 2011), son T49A4 Neptune (b. 2014), daughter T49A5 Nebula (b. 2017), and little son T49A6 Charlie II (b. late 2021 or early 22). Charlie II has an injury to his lower jaw where it protrudes and his lower teeth are visible, which doesn't seem to slow him down. Pictures are grainy as it was pretty dark! They went on the hunt after we got there, and there was a breach, quite a bit of rolling around and tail slapping, and a sweet spy hop. T18 Esperanza showed up, but fairly far away… reports had at least T19B Galiano around but not in our sight. Despite the weather it was a very fun day and always lovely to see these beautiful friends, and meet Charlie II! -photos by Bonnie Gretz, August 23, 2024

Thu, Aug 22 - North Puget Sound (T36/T36Bs meet the T99s) - T36B4 & T99B Holly - T99B Holly - T36/36Bs and T99s in Saratoga Passage. Link to more photos. -photos by Serena Tierra, August 22, 2024

Earlier this morning off of Point Jefferson! The two transient groups (T36s and T99s) ID’d in the two ON threads came together for some socializing and we heard vocalizations above and below the water on the PSE! Motor off to observe and the whales came towards us.  -photos by Deanna Deery-Schmitt, August 22, 2024

Thu, Aug 22 - Puget Sound (T36, T36Bs, T99s) - T36B4 & T36B1 Bhotia - T36B4 being pushed by T99E behind T99B Holly - The August 22 encounter was absolutely once in a lifetime! We started out looking for the T99s when we instead found BCX1702 Uluka the humpback. While watching we saw orcas splashing and circling in the distance so we puttered over to them. They turned out to be the T36s, not the 99s. While watching them, they suddenly did this weird sideways swim thing right off our bow and then Uluka appeared right behind them! He started swimming in circles, rolling around, and trumpeting. I can only speculate but I almost wonder if he was irritated and broke up their hunt. After a few minutes he continued southbound and the T36s moved west for about a mile then stopped and started logging. While logging we could hear them vocalizing at the surface so we dropped a hydrophone in to record the audio. Then in the distance we saw another group of orcas (who turned out to be the T99s) breaching in the distance and porpoising to us. As the T99s started breaching in the distance the T36s started to breach as well! They came together then started to all travel NB together breaching and tail slapping all the while. It was quite fun to watch 3 year old T99E play with <1 year old T36B4, she was very active and definitely pushed him around a bit. -photos & IDs by Kyla Bivens, August 22, 2024

The best possible welcome home from our time up north was having J-Pod and all of L-Pod (!!) off the west side of San Juan Island on our first day back. We were able to catch up with these 58 Southern Residents from shore; here are a few highlights. It was extra special not only because the SRKW had been away from the Salish Sea the whole time we were, but also because it was our intern Kelsey's first time meeting L-Pod. It would prove to be a short (~24 hour) visit from Ls, but Js were still "in" as of the evening of August 21. Time: 5:00 PM
Species seen: Orca
Number of animals seen: 4
Where seen: Entering Port Townsend Ship Canal from Oak Bay to the south
Direction of travel : North
Behaviors observed: Traveling
If orcas, any males?:
Any unusual markings?:
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your encounter?: They were too far away for details. We have lived on Oak Bay for over 50 years and have never seen orca in front of our house before. They were traveling along the west shore off Indian Island. They surfaced several times, spouting as they did. I have a 3 minute video but don't know if I can email it. [follow up:] We first saw them near the south end of Indian Island just north of the cut between Indian and Marrowstone Island. We watched until they entered the Port Townsend ship canal on their way toward Port Townsend. We were thrilled to see them and appreciate your information.

BIGG'S KILLER WHALES (mammal-eating ecotype) -

Sat, Aug 17 - Strait of Juan de Fuca (T46s) - T122 Centeki - T46E Thor
15:20 -
What a rare encounter we’ve had while whale watching off the bow of HAL Westerdam! We watched the Biggs/Transient Orcas T046 siblings frolic off Neah Bay, Washington for a good 10 minutes. Mom ‘Wake’ (1966) was last seen 02-20-2023 and is now presumed deceased. Of the 8 calves she birthed, her daughters gave her 15 grandchildren and her granddaughters gave her 5 great grandchildren. The eldest in this group we saw is a female named ‘Centeki’ (1982) along with her brothers ‘Strider’ (2000), ‘Thor’ (2003) and their youngest ‘Loki’ (2012). May they all live long and swim our oceans freely. Wake sure left us with this gift of a beautiful family. Thanks Jenny Körner! [Reported seen heading north]. Mon, Aug 12 - San Juans (T65As minus T65A5) - Sorry to be so tardy in reporting this. However, this is new for me, and I have been searching, trying to find out if something else had been reported about these whales we saw while on the ferry coming from Lopez to Anacortes on Monday evening. We have been traveling on that ferry route for more than 30 years, and in that time, this is the first time I have ever seen whales on that crossing! And actually it was a passenger in the car with me who spotted them. She was visiting me from Turkey and I was taking her back so she could catch her flight back to Istanbul. One of the things she had wanted to do, and we didn't have time for, was a whale watching trip. We were on the very late 6:20 pm departure of the Yakima from Lopez and we were in Thatcher Pass between Blakely and Decatur Islands. We were in the car on the upper deck facing Blakely when suddenly she announced "Whales!" and was out of the car like a shot! She had her phone with her and had her camera running and filmed about 50 seconds of video of them. She was over the moon excited!!!! And so was I!!! The ferry captain made no announcement about the whales. We were traveling east toward Anacortes. The whales were heading west. We thought at first there was only one whale. However when we later looked at the video, there are two. I am estimating that the video was shot at about 7:55 pm on Monday. Anyway, my Turkish friend ended up with a whale sighting from a Washington State ferry and was extremely happy. -Mary Ann Cameron

T65A3 Amir -
I took off to see if I could catch the T65As pass Sandy Point. T65A, T65A4, and T65A6 were mid channel, and T65A2 was closer to Camano, but T65A3, Amir decided to hang out on the Whidbey side. I thought these two pictures might give you an idea of what shooting with a 600 mm long lens can do. The shot with the pier in the picture was shot at 180mm. The close up is the next time he surfaced zoomed in to 600 mm then cropped. My point in this is to help people understand distances. You can't tell how close we are to whales, and with the compression our lenses create, you can't tell how close boats are. I was on my way home from Belfair to pickering area when I stopped and was able to see the T77s in Allyn around noon. Once they headed south I raced home and made it down to the HI bridge in time to watch them pass underneath going south then again back north. From there I decided to go back to Allyn and wait for them. They took 3 hours to get there but it was worth every second of the wait. As they circled Allyn they came straight at all of us standing on the dock and swam DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH OUR FEET!!! I'm talking 5 feet directly under us! It was the most insane and magical experience! If you were out there, I had so much fun with all of you haha!
