On August 8, 1970 a crew of professional orca hunters rounded up all members of J, K, and L pods of the Southern Resident Orca Community. Using underwater explosives, they herded them into Penn Cove, where they drew a long net to seal them in the cove. Over the next several days they forced the smaller, younger orcas into corrals to get nets around them to haul them to trucks for delivery to buyers around the world. Lolita/Tokitae/ Sk’aliChehl-tenaut was among the seven orcas taken away.
